Inleiding

Introduction

Around the turn of the century, Café Central was established in the existing building at Markt 22, which was not subject to national heritage protection. In 1923, the then owner Louis de Groot had the back hall of the café completely refitted and decorated in Art Deco style. The hall opened in 1924. The decoration consisted of oil paintings on canvas stretched against the walls. The paintings were executed by the artist Pieter Den Besten from Rotterdam. From 1915 onwards, Den Besten worked frequently for Rotterdam cinema owner Abraham Tuschinski. He created, among other things, the paintings for the now-demolished Grand Theater Pompenburg in Rotterdam (1923) and the decoration of Tuschinski's cinema in Amsterdam (1921); he was also involved in the interior design of the steamship Nieuw Amsterdam of the H.A.L.. Besides the paintings in the Tuschinski Theater in Amsterdam, only the paintings in Café Central have been preserved from Den Besten's hand. In 1939, a number of stained-glass windows were installed. Two depictions of women were thereby removed and a third was cut up and relocated.

The dome roof was originally executed with stained glass by J. Peeters and wooden panels.

The hall was completely renovated in 1992 at the behest of owner De Groot, a grandson of Louis de Groot. The paintings were brought back into view and restored under the direction of Theo Elsing (these had been hidden from view in 1953 when the ceiling was also renewed).

N.B. Only the Art Deco hall of the building Markt 22 is involved in the protection.

N.B. The back area and back wall have been altered and renewed. The bar does not belong to the original interior. The luxury electric lamps have since disappeared. The tiled border of the wainscoting and the tiles along the parquet floor date from 1992.

Description

The banquet hall is situated on the ground floor of Markt 22 on the side of the Zeugstraat.

The floor plan of the elongated hall consists of a broad section on the Markt side and a narrower section towards the Zeugstraat. At the rear (Zeugstraat side) there was formerly a small stage, separated by two stepped brick arches and curtains. Adjacent to this was a corridor with a rear exit. In the current situation, one stepped brick arch has been placed across the full width of the space at the rear. The floor consists of an original oak parquet. The walls of the hall are decorated from the wainscoting upwards. The wainscoting itself is undecorated and is finished with a simple moulding.

The paintings on the walls (only on the long sides of the space) consist of thirteen stylised female figures in various poses. The women, originally sixteen in number, each stand within their own frame. The women are richly clothed and surrounded by stylised cloud patterns. The paintings, designed in Art Deco style, are executed predominantly in pastel shades ('ton-sur-ton'). The background is predominantly orange-red. The whole is laid out with strong linearity, bold contours and large flat areas. Although all figures have different colouring and detailing, the considered flat division and strong stylisation impart a certain repose to the paintings. The paintings are finished at the top with a moulding.

At the front, in the right wall and in the angled wall, coupled stained-glass windows are installed. In these windows, fanlights with casement windows and fixed sections have been placed. The coloured Art Deco glass is inscribed with texts, namely IMW An 41 and Central. Moreover, the coats of arms of Gouda and Bergambacht and a drinking peasant figure are stained. The texts and images refer to the function of the banquet hall and to the family of the patron. The timber ceiling has a geometric wooden frame with painted decoration between, likewise consisting of flat areas with stylised organic forms. In the centre is a rectangular light dome.

Valuation

The Art Deco banquet hall of Café Central is of general importance due to its cultural and architectural-historical value.

The hall has cultural-historical value as a representative example of a function and form of decoration from the Interwar period. Within the artist's oeuvre, the decoration occupies a special place.

The hall has architectural-historical value due to the detailing and material use.

The situation on the central Marktplein in Gouda underscores the special importance of this interior.

The paintings are nearly intact.

The hall represents, through the place the paintings occupy in the artist's oeuvre and because interiors of this scale are relatively rarely preserved, considerable rarity value.
