Inleiding
De over de Haven gelegen BRUG, genoemd 'Uiterste Brug', is in 1879 gebouwd ter vervanging van een draaibrug uit 1845. De grotendeels gietijzeren brug is vervaardigd doo de Haagse IJzergieterij 'De Prins van Oranje'. De brugdekken konden afzonderlijk van elkaar bewegen en zijn voorzien van boven het wegdek uitstekende kwadranten (kamwielen) voor het hefmechanisme, waarmee de vallen worden bediend; in de loop van de 20ste eeuw is de brug vastgezet. Tegelijkertijd zijn de contragewichten verwijderd.
De brug vormt één van de drie verbindingen tussen de Oosterhaven en de Westerhaven en is een verkeersbrug van het type dubbele bascule- of wipbrug.
De brug maakt deel uit van het beschermde stadsgezicht van Gouda.
Omschrijving
De "beweegbare" brugdelen (vallen) liggen tussen aanbruggen, die rusten op vijf hoge, zich verjongende gietijzeren kolommen. Deze zijn door middel van eveneens gietijzeren consoles met de geknikte ijzeren balken van de aanbruggen verbonden. Zowel de hellende "beweegbare" delen (de vallen) als de niet beweegbare, minder hellende brugdelen (de aanbruggen) zijn voorzien van balustrades die zijn samengesteld uit tussen eenvoudige, gietijzeren balusters staande spijlenreeksen met rondboogfriezen. De kwadranten of kamwielen zijn onder meer ingevuld met vijf cirkels en zijn verbonden met metalen huizen van de bewegingswerken. Deze zijn bevestigd aan zware conische palen. Op de kaden aan weerszijden van de aanbruggen staan balustrades. Deze bestaan uit rijk versierde gietijzeren balusters, waartussen stangen zijn bevestigd. De brugdekken bestaan uit op ijzeren balken liggende planken.
Waardering
De dubbele basculebrug is van algemeen belang vanwege de cultuurhistorische en architectuurhistorische waarde.
De brug is (cultuur)historische van algemeen belang als een bijzondere onderdeel van een zeer oude infrastructurele voorziening en als een goed voorbeeld van een typologische ontwikkeling in de bruggenbouw.

The BRIDGE spanning the Haven, named 'Uiterste Brug', was built in 1879 to replace a swing bridge from 1845.
