The register's description

Inleiding

Introduction

The Willem Vroesentuin originally belonged to the Willem Vroesenhuys (the Old Men's House from 1555). The plantsoen of the landscape garden type has a site boundary, which consists of a cast-iron GATE in Eclectic style, part of the Raoul Wallenbergplantsoen complex.

Description

The cast-iron ironwork stands on a brick plinth (approx. 60 cm., cross bond) with pillars on sandstone feet, these feet are set into the plinth. On the garden side (at the height of the gate pillars) the plinth has brick buttresses. The entrance to the plantsoen is formed by a double swing gate. The gate pillars consist of elongated, flat iron parts whose edges are outlined in relief. In the slightly outswinging foot there is a segment-shaped recess. Ornamental elements are incorporated in the middle. At the top there are volute-shaped elements crowned with pomegranates. The simple spokes of the gate are connected with two horizontal iron strips, likewise without special detailing.

Valuation

The gate is of general interest because of its cultural and architectural-historical value because of the richly executed form in Eclectic style and as an ornamental part of the plantsoen.

The gate has cultural-historical value because of the cultural-historical relationship with the Sint Jan, the Van der Vorm chapel and the Willem Vroesenhuys.

The ironwork has architectural-historical value as an example of street furniture in the period of its creation and because of the detailing and the material use (cast iron).

The gate has urban planning value because of its image-determining location and the functional and spatial coherence with the chapel, the plantsoen and the surrounding buildings.

The gate is of importance because of the high degree of integrity in main form and in detailing.
