Inleiding

Introduction

Former BARRACKS for the Infantry from 1885, located on the west side of the Mosterdsteeg. The building was designed by the Corps of Engineers in Den Helder in Neo-Renaissance style. In 1994 and 1998 the building was restored and internally converted into an apartment complex. The exterior, apart from some doors subsequently added to the front facade, is original.

Description

The barracks has a rectangular floor plan and comprises three storeys decreasing in height, above which a mezzanine and a hipped roof covered with black Dutch tiles with the ridge line parallel to the street. The facades are constructed in red machine-made brickwork in Waal format in English bond with struck joints, alternated with accents in contrasting yellow brickwork.

The symmetrically arranged front facade (E) comprises a total of thirteen bays, of which the middle five form a central risalit. The front facade is terminated on both sides by a corner pilaster, which is rusticated on the ground floor and first storey. The recessed brick courses between the rusticated sections are executed in yellow brickwork. On the second storey and at the height of the mezzanine, the corner pilasters are provided with field panels. The front facade rests on a cemented plinth terminated by a cornice which also serves as a drip moulding for the windows on the ground floor. The remaining windows have cemented drip mouldings. At the location of the central risalit and the corner pilasters, the base is executed in tapered jointed artificial stone. The storeys are separated from each other by a band of yellow brickwork and, at the location of the central risalit and the corner pilasters, cemented cornices. On either side of the central risalit, wall anchors mark the position of the floor levels. Beneath each wall anchor is a round cast-iron ventilation grille. At the top, the front facade is terminated by a continuous ornamental cornice resting on stepped projecting brickwork with small brackets of yellow brickwork below. Beneath the brackets in the left and right facade sections are round ventilation grilles. The central risalit features on both the first and second storeys five basket-arch windows provided with two coupled six-pane casements, both with semi-circular two-pane fanlights (drop light). Higher up are five horizontal mezzanine windows provided with two coupled two-pane casements. The central risalit is adorned at the height of the window arches on the first and second storeys with a band of yellow brickwork. The window axes on either side of the central risalit are provided with a round-arch window with nine-pane fixed frame and semi-circular fanlight (drop light) on the ground floor, a segmental twelve-pane sash window on the first and second storeys, and a horizontal three-pane mezzanine window. The windows on the second storey are somewhat lower than those on the first storey. The round arches above the windows on the ground floor and the segmental arches of the storey windows have a freestone keystone with diamond point, the segmental arches moreover freestone springer stones with recessed rusticated surface. In the segmental arches above the windows of the second storey, yellow brickwork is used instead of a keystone.

The side facades are executed as blank walls with two square cast-iron grilles in the upper part of each storey. The rear facade (W) is nearly identical to the front facade.

Valuation

The barracks is of general importance due to its cultural-historical, architectural-historical and typological value as a largely intact surviving example of a military residential building from the last quarter of the 19th century, constructed in Neo-Renaissance style.
