Inleiding
Voormalig dubbel KAASPAKHUIS 'Alkmaar' en 'Gouda', gebouwd in 1903 in opdracht van K. de Jong Mz. Het pand is gelegen aan de zuidoostzijde van de Bierkade. In de in oranjerode verblendsteen opgetrokken voorgevel zijn aan de renaissancestijl ontleende motieven toegepast. Het gebouw heeft tot 1992 dienst gedaan als kaaspakhuis. Na restauratie is sinds 1993 het Museum van de 20ste eeuw in het pand gehuisvest. Het gelijktijdig met de pakhuizen opgerichte achtergebouw aan het Venidse maakt deel uit van de bescherming.
Omschrijving
Het dubbele pakhuis is gebouwd op nagenoeg vierkant grondplan en telt vijf bouwlagen onder twee evenwijdige en met rode Hollandse pannen gedekte mansardedaken waarvan de noklijnen vrijwel haaks staan op de straat. De gerende voorgevel (NW) is opgetrokken in oranjerode verblendsteen waalformaat in kruisverband met snijvoeg, afgewisseld met contrasterende banden van witte baksteen ter hoogte van de onder- en bovendorpels van de vensters. Ook in het midden van de in rode baksteen gemetselde strekken boven de vensters en deuren is witte baksteen toegepast. De sobere achter- en zijgevels zijn gemetseld in rode machinale waalsteen eveneens in kruisverband met snijvoeg. In de vier gevels bevinden zich muurankers ter hoogte van de verdiepingsvloeren. Zowel de voor- als de achtergevel heeft de vorm van twee geknikte tuitgevels, met hardsteen ter plaatse van de aanzetten en knikken.
De symmetrische voorgevel telt twee keer vier vensterassen waarin op elke bouwlaag een tweedelig venster voorzien van achtruits onderramen en tweeruits bovenlichten. De derde en zesde vensteras hebben op de tweede-, derde- en zolderverdieping een vergelijkbaar driedelig venster en op de begane grond en eerste verdieping een dubbele deur met driedelig bovenlicht (voorzien van tweeruits ramen). De deuren en vensters van de begane grond zijn voorzien van luiken, de deuren op de verdieping van twee zesruits ramen. Ter hoogte van de zolderverdieping zijn de buitenste vensters van elk pand niet tweedelig, maar enkel: een achtruits openslaand raam met tweeruits bovenlicht. In het midden van de zolderverdieping is in witgeglazuurde baksteen het bouwjaar 1903 ingemetseld. Bovenin beide tuitgevels bevindt zich een rondvenster. De twee tuiten worden bekroond door rijkgesmede windwijzers. De begane grond heeft in het midden een witmarmeren eerste steen met het opschrift: "DE EERSTE STEEN/GELEGD DOOR/El: Paul: de JONG./OUD 4½ JAAR./13 MAART 1903." Boven de tweede verdieping hangen twee witgeverfde houten naamborden met in zwarte letters links "GOUDA" en rechts "ALKMAAR".
Bovenaan de gesloten zijgevels bevindt zich een bakgoot op klossen. Hierboven heeft de linkerzijgevel (NO) in het midden een dakkapel met zesruits stolpraam (boven de rechterzijgevel recent vervangen door een liftopbouw in historiserende vormgeving).
De achtergevel (ZO) heeft een met de voorgevel vergelijkbare vensterverdeling. In de derde en zesde vensteras bevinden zich echter geen drie-, maar tweedelige vensters. Op de eerste verdieping bevindt zich in de tweede, vierde, vijfde en zevende vensteras een dubbele deur, voorzien van twee achtruits ramen en een tweedelig bovenlicht. De begane grond van de achtergevel wordt door een moderne tussenbouw aan het oog onttrokken.
In het interieur zijn alle verdiepingsvloeren uitgevoerd als enkelvoudige balklagen, die met smalle delen zijn bevloerd en in het midden ondersteund worden door onderslagbalken op standvinken. In het linker pand (nr.4a) herinneren twee kaasstellingen op de zolderverdieping en een vaste bascule op de begane grond aan de oorspronkelijke functie. De twee kappen zijn uitgevoerd als beschoten gordingenkap.
Het in rode machinale waalsteen opgetrokken achtergebouw heeft een rechthoekige plattegrond en telt één bouwlaag onder een met rode geglazuurde kruispannen gedekt lessenaardak waarvan de nok de gevel aan het Venidse afdekt. In deze hoge gevel (ZO) die voorzien is van twee rijen muurankers bevindt zich van links naar rechts een venster met dubbel luik, twee opgeklampte dubbele deuren met vijfruits bovenlichten voorzien van diefijzers, en drie smallere vensters eveneens met dubbele luiken.
Waardering
Het dubbele pakhuis met bijbehorend achtergebouw is van algemeen belang wegens cultuurhistorische en architectuurhistorische waarde als gaaf bewaard gebleven voorbeeld van een kaaspakhuis uit het begin van de 20ste eeuw. Tevens heeft het pand ensemblewaarde in relatie tot de diverse 19de- en 20ste- eeuwse kaaspakhuizen aan de Bierkade en in de directe omgeving daarvan.

Former double CHEESE WAREHOUSE 'Alkmaar' and 'Gouda', built in 1903 on the instructions of K. de Jong Mz. The building is situated on the south-east side of the Bierkade. Description
The double warehouse is built on an almost square plan and comprises five storeys under two parallel mansard roofs covered with red Dutch tiles, the ridge lines of which stand at almost right angles to the street. The gable facade (NW) is constructed in orange-red facing brick of wall format in English bond with cut joint, alternated with contrasting bands of white brick at the height of the sills and lintels of the windows. White brick is also used in the middle of the stretches of red brick masonry above the windows and doors. The austere rear and side facades are built in red machine-made brick also in English bond with cut joint. In the four facades there are ornamental wall anchors at the height of the floor levels. Both the front and rear facades have the form of two bent spout gables, with hardstone at the points of the angles and bends.
The symmetrical front facade has two sets of four window bays in which on each storey a two-part window is provided with four-pane opening lower windows and two-pane fanlights. The third and sixth window bays have on the second, third and attic storeys a comparable three-part window and on the ground and first floors a double door with three-part fanlight (provided with two-pane panes). The doors and windows on the ground floor are provided with shutters, the doors on the upper floor with two six-pane windows. At the height of the attic storey, the outer windows of each building are not two-part but single: a four-pane opening window with two-pane fanlight. In the middle of the attic storey the year of construction 1903 is set in white-glazed brick. At the top of both spout gables is a round window. The two sections are crowned by finely wrought weathervanes. The ground floor has in the middle a white marble foundation stone with the inscription: "THE FIRST STONE/LAID BY/El: Paul: de JONG./AGE 4½ YEARS./13 MARCH 1903." Above the second storey hang two white-painted wooden name boards with in black letters on the left "GOUDA" and on the right "ALKMAAR".
At the top of the closed side facades is a gutter on corbels. Above this, the left side facade (NE) has in the middle a roof dormer with six-pane lantern window (above the right side facade recently replaced by a lift extension in historicising design).
The rear facade (SE) has a window arrangement comparable to the front facade. However, in the third and sixth window bays there are not three- but two-part windows. On the first floor, in the second, fourth, fifth and seventh window bays there is a double door, provided with two four-pane windows and a two-part fanlight. The ground floor of the rear facade is obscured from view by modern intermediate construction.
In the interior all floor levels are executed as simple beam construction, which are floored with narrow sections and in the middle supported by underslung beams on wall corbels. In the left building (nr.4a) two cheese racks on the attic storey and a fixed weighing platform on the ground floor recall the original function. The two roof structures are executed as boarded purlin roof.
The rear building constructed in red machine-made brick has a rectangular plan and comprises one storey under a lean-to roof covered with red glazed pan tiles, the ridge of which covers the gable on the Venidse. In this tall facade (SE) which is provided with two rows of ornamental wall anchors, there is from left to right a window with double shutter, two clamped double doors with five-pane fanlights provided with anti-theft bars, and three narrower windows also with double shutters.
Valuation
The double warehouse with its associated rear building is of general importance due to its cultural-historical and architectural-historical value as a well-preserved example of a cheese warehouse from the early 20th century. The building also has ensemble value in relation to the various 19th and 20th century cheese warehouses on the Bierkade and in the immediate vicinity thereof.
