Inleiding

Introduction

HORSE FOOTBRIDGE (of the beam bridge type), originally called 'Stedumernieuwtil' and nowadays called 'Peertil', located over the Westerwijtwerdermaar, directly west of the junction with the Stedumermaar, in the North Groningen terpen region. The bridge was originally built before 1754, as evidenced by archive documents of the Hunsingo water board, as a movable bridge for tow horses. Through the construction of this bridge, the tow horse could be transported from one side to the other, which made tow navigation possible in this area. In 1886 the bridge was replaced by a fixed footbridge at the request of the Hunsingo water board. Contractor J. Pol from Stedum was entrusted with the execution and the ironwork was supplied by G. Bodewes from Sappemeer. The tow paths have since disappeared; in 1996 the bridge was completely restored.

Due to its high position, the horse footbridge is a dominant spatial element in the surrounding landscape. Nowadays the bridge has lost its original function and is used as a footbridge.

Description

HORSE FOOTBRIDGE consisting of two curved iron I-beams, interconnected by cross-members over which a non-original roadway has been laid. On both sides of the bridge and on the abutments a bridge railing of riveted steel angle, T and pipe profiles. Centrally on the bridge a non-original fence. The bridge rests on abutments of wolf walls and cubby timbers (walls of iron I-profiles between which vertical trough vaults of red brick); the abutments are filled with earth. In the abutment on the south side a non-original stone bearing the inscription '1666-1996 peertil wat bleev'm is'.

Valuation

Horse footbridge of the beam bridge type of general importance for reasons of architectural and cultural-historical value:

- as an example of a horse footbridge from the fourth quarter of the nineteenth century typical of the Groningen sea clay region

- for reasons of the reasonably high degree of integrity

- for reasons of the great rarity value of this bridge type

- for reasons of the application of a type of abutment characteristic of the province of Groningen

- for reasons of its special and striking setting in the surrounding landscape

- as a reminder of the tow navigation that took place in the province of Groningen
