SHOP-DWELLING HOUSE, circa 1885, built in eclectic forms. Carefully detailed front facade featuring, among other things, a wooden shop front. Located within an important facade within the protected townscape Heusden stadskern. The building was erected on a location that has been inhabited since at least the early eighteenth century. Remains of this are likely still to be found in the walls shared with neighbouring buildings. Description.

The building is located within the protected townscape Heusden stadskern at the beginning of the northern side of the Botermarkt. The elongated building on a rectangular ground plan comprises three storeys beneath a gabled roof standing perpendicular to the street, covered with Dutch tiles, and is two bays wide. Grooved plastered facade with recessed stepped gable, furnished with cover plates supported on consoles and with a wrought-iron crest. Wooden shop front with pilasters and a segmental arch crest. Windows with rounded shoulders and moulded surrounds with ornamental crowns. Six-pane wooden sash windows. Attic storey with a small window with an oculus above. Coupled volute-shaped consoles. More precise information about the older core of the house can still be read in the shared walls and, given the absence of internal load-bearing walls, in all probability still preserved floor beam layers which are now concealed from view by a ceiling consisting of broad wooden sections. The eastern wall has been largely rebuilt; the candle niches present there have also been created in this process. On the rear facade the windows are closed flush. The window arrangement is still the original. Noteworthy here are the relatively rare sash windows with nine-pane glazing bars on the second storey. Internally, all walls on the ground floor have been removed. The floor is covered with black tiles from Holland. The building was originally probably undercellared.

On the upper storeys the condition of the renovation from circa 1885 can still be clearly read in the room arrangement, stucco ceilings, the alcove and the finely worked wooden partition at the kitchen. The roof truss structure also dates from the second half of the nineteenth century.

Valuation.

The building is of general interest owing to its cultural-historical value as a distinctive expression of socio-economic development; namely the rise of small and medium-sized enterprises in a small town in the second half of the nineteenth century and the associated restructuring of originally older buildings. As such, the building also embodies a rare and well-preserved building type. The building has ensemble values as an essential component of the important and monumental axis formed by the Botermarkt for Heusden. Moreover, the building is of architectural-historical interest owing to, among other things, the detailing of the wooden shop front, the facade ornamentation and traces of eclecticism.
