Inleiding.
POSTKANTOOR met bovenwoning, in 1893 opgetrokken in Neo-gotische vormen met metselwerkdecoraties. Het ontwerp werd gemaakt door rijksbouwmeester D.E.C. Knuttel. Bij het postkantoor horen tevens een hardstenen en een gietijzeren brievenbus (ca. 1900). Ook nu nog doet het pand dienst als postkantoor. Het pand is markant gelegen op de straathoek met de Pelsestraat tegenover het stadhuis.
Omschrijving.
Onderkelderd hoekpand van twee bouwlagen met bakstenen gevels in schoon metselwerk. De plattegrond van de hoofdmassa is rechthoekig met twee eveneens rechthoekige, maar lagere, bouwvolumes aan de Pelsestraat. De hoofdmassa heeft een plat dak met schilden gedekt met romaanse pannen. De aanbouwen aan de Pelsestraat hebben evenwijdig aan de straat lopende zadeldaken eveneens met romaanse pannen gedekt. Het linkergedeelte van de gevel aan de Botermarkt wordt bekroond met een trapgevel met een klein zadeldak. Een opvallend element is verder de geveltoren met houtskelet in het gedeelte aan de Pelsestraat die gedragen wordt door twee houten korbelen en gedekt is door een met leien in maasdekking gedekte opengewerkte spits met kleine houten frontonnetjes. De voorgevel is rijk geornamenteerd met onder meer spitsbogen, segmentbogen, gedrukte bogen en driepassen in nissen om onder meer de verdiepingsvensters. Het linker gedeelte van de gevel risaleert iets. Hier is een spitsbogige deuropening aangebracht met een paneeldeur met ijzerbeslag; bovenlicht met stenen tracering en glas-in-lood. Dit linker gedeelte wordt bekroond door een trapgevel met ranke kantelen en geornamenteerd met ijzeren sierankers. De trapgevel wordt bekroond door een centrale pinakel. De vensters op de begane grond hebben fraai geornamenteerde houten kozijnen en ramen met bijpassende hardstenen lateien. Verspringend hardstenen lijstwerk dat overgaat in de hardstenen vensteronderdorpels. Ter hoogte van de verdieping is in de voorgevel op een hardstenen plaat de inscriptie Post- en telegraafkantoor aangebracht. Onder de goot op klosjes bevindt zich een bakstenen spitsboogfries. Zijgevel aan de Pelsestraat met twee aparte ingangen waarvan één met hardstenen trap en opgeklampte deur, de andere met een inrijpoort en stenen schamppalen. In de zijgevel bevindt zich tevens een hoog opgemetselde schoorsteen met blindnis en sieranker.
Een belangrijk architectonisch detail in de voorgevel is de hardstenen brievenbus met neogotische stijlmotieven waaronder driepassen en een vierpas met een in reliëf aangebrachte posthoorn met strikken. Deze dateert uit de bouwtijd. De losstaande vierkante ijzeren brievenbus is van een iets latere datum.
Inwendig is met name het bedrijfsgedeelte van de posterijen geheel gewijzigd. Via de ingang aan de Boterstraat komt men in de grote hal waarin aan de rechterzijde de loketten zijn gevestigd. De boven het postkantoor gelegen voormalige dienstwoning is wel gaaf bewaard gebleven.
Waardering.
Het postkantoor van Heusden is van algemeen cultuurhistorisch belang als bijzondere uitdrukking van sociaal-economische en typologische ontwikkelingen; aan het gebouw zijn de ontwikkelingen met betrekking tot de steeds veranderende eisen van het postbedrijf goed af te lezen. Het postkantoor van Heusden is van algemeen architectuurhistorisch belang wegens de kwaliteit van de gebruikte neogotische ornamentiek, die in de bouwtijd zowel refereerde aan de gotische vormen van het tegenover gelegen, in 1944 verwoeste, laat-gotische stadhuis, het aan de Botermarkt 3 gelegen in neogotische vormen opgetrokken woonhuis, als aan de vestingstatus van het stadje middels de hangtoren. Description.
Cellared corner building of two storeys with brick façades in fair-faced brickwork. The plan of the main mass is rectangular with two likewise rectangular but lower building volumes on the Pelsestraat. The main mass has a flat roof with shields covered with Romanesque tiles. The extensions on the Pelsestraat have gabled roofs running parallel to the street likewise covered with Romanesque tiles. The left part of the façade on the Botermarkt is crowned with a stepped gable with a small gabled roof. A striking element is further the bell tower with timber frame in the section on the Pelsestraat which is supported by two wooden corbels and covered by an openwork spire covered with slate in Maas bond with small wooden pediments. The front façade is richly ornamented with among others pointed arches, segmental arches, relieved arches and trefoils in niches around among other things the storey windows. The left part of the façade projects slightly. Here a pointed-arched door opening has been placed with a panelled door with iron fittings; fanlight with stone tracery and decorative glass. In the side façade there is also a high-built chimney with blind opening and ornamental wall anchor.
An important architectural detail in the front façade is the hardstone letterbox with Neo-Gothic style motifs including trefoils and a quatrefoil with a post horn with ribbons rendered in relief. This dates from the building period. The freestanding square iron letterbox is from a slightly later date.
Internally in particular the business section of the post office has been completely altered. Via the entrance on the Boterstraat one enters the large hall in which on the right side the counters are located. The former service flat located above the post office has been well preserved.
