Omschrijving
Inleiding.

Description
Introduction.
The former RIDING SCHOOL was built in 1887-1888 in Rationalist style on a large military site and formed part of a complex with a number of eighteenth-century rows of stables and other military structures. Some of these are protected by the State, some have been demolished. Today the building has been converted into a sports hall. The cast iron ornamental bars in the windows have been blocked with sheet material for this purpose.
Description.
The single-storey detached building has a rectangular floor plan and a gabled roof with black Spanish tiles. The facades are constructed of machine-made brick with a sandstone plinth and window sills. The front facade, on the west side, has corner pilasters that continue under the projecting gutter line as climbing round arch friezes on wooden ornamental posts. The central bay with renewed door likewise projects half a brick thickness. On either side are four windows under segmental arches of yellow brick, of which the middle two are coupled under one arch. The arch infills consist of brick mosaic. The rusticated corner and quoins of the windows and doors are of sandstone. Above the door is a round arch window and in the gable a rose window, both with rusticated quoins of sandstone. The side facades have a row of nine coupled windows under yellow brick segmental arches, articulated by pilasters. The wooden gutter lines rest on quarter-round blocks. The northern side facade is distinguished by three pilasters reinforced by three substantial round corner stones with concrete pillars above. The fanlights of the windows between them have been preserved. In a renovation of around 1985, the masonry below was completely rebuilt. A door has been placed in the middle of this facade. The rear facade is in its main layout original and corresponds to the west facade, but has received a new entrance for the benefit of the sports hall.
