Inleiding.
Het voormalige BANKGEBOUW voor de AMSTERDAMSE BANK met BOVENWONING werd gebouwd in 1925 in Expressionistische stijl met Nieuw-Zakelijke elementen, het interieur in Art Déco. Het ontwerp was van J. Ouendag en P. de Nijs. Bij de verbouwing tot restaurant is het interieur goeddeels bewaard gebleven, een deel van de vensters is vereenvoudigd.
Omschrijving.
Het twee- tot drielaagse onderkelderde pand heeft een rechthoekige plattegrond. De gevels zijn opgetrokken uit machinale baksteen, de horizontale lijnen worden geaccentueerd door brede doorlopende dorpels en luifels van hardsteen. Het hoge schilddak is voorzien van geglazuurde verbeterde Hollandse dakpannen met slakvormige eindvorsten en heeft een houten lijstgoot. De gevel is asymmetrisch. Achter het tweelaagse brede deel lag het kantoorgedeelte. In het midden bevinden zich daar drie getraliede keldervensters, vervolgens een reeks van zeven bandvensters. Gescheiden door een hardsteen lijst volgen direct drie brede vensters, deels nog met ijzeren kleine roedenverdeling. Een brede latei overspant deze hoge vensters, waarvan het middelste het breedste is. Achter deze dubbele vensterpartij bevindt zich de vroegere kantoorruimte. De verdieping hierboven bezit weer zeven langwerpige schuifvensters. Het drielaagse deel ter rechterzijde markeert de entree en heeft een dubbele ingang onder een luifel op klosjes en rechts een klein raam. Zowel dit raam als de drie getraliede bovenlichtramen hebben een brede natuursteen omlijsting. De rechterdeur geeft toegang tot de bovenwoning, met op de eerste etage een staand raam en een vierlichts raam, en daar boven drie vensters. Het hoge rechtergedeelte is monumentaal vormgegeven. De hoek is deels afgerond en deels afgeschuind, geaccentueerd door natuursteen blokken. De voorzijde heeft een gedecoreerde ijzeren vlaggestokhouder met mast, daarachter is de zijgevel hoog opgetrokken naar de schoorsteenpartijen toe.
Via enkele treden bereikt men de geverniste vleugeldeuren en het tochtportaal. Dit is evenals de rest van deze etage voorzien van gemêleerde vloertegels in vlechtpatroon. De ruimte hierachter en hiernaast heeft een hoge betegelde lambrizering in zwart, groen en gemêleerd in Art Déco-vormen. Ook de grote balie links achter is geheel betegeld. Nissen en hoeken tonen waar eens loketten en dergelijke waren. Boven een deel van de ruimte is een rechthoekig melkglazen legraam geplaatst.
Waardering.
Het gebouw is van algemeen belang. Het heeft cultuurhistorische waarde als voorbeeld van de sociaal-economische ontwikkeling, en is tevens van belang als voorbeeld van de typologische ontwikkeling van het bankgebouw. Het is van belang voor de architectuurgeschiedenis vanwege stijl en in het oeuvre van beide architecten Ouendag en De Nijs. Het gebouw is belangrijk wegens de ornamentiek en vanwege de gaafheid van in- en exterieur.

The former BANK BUILDING for the AMSTERDAMSE BANK with UPPER FLOOR was built in 1925 in Expressionist style with New Objectivity elements, the interior in Art Deco. The design was by J. Description.
The two- to three-storey undercellared building has a rectangular plan. The facades are built of machine-made brick, the horizontal lines are accentuated by broad continuous cornices and overhangs of hard stone. The steep hipped roof is fitted with glazed improved Dutch roof tiles with shell-shaped end ornaments and has a wooden drip moulding. The facade is asymmetrical. Behind the two-storey broad section lay the office part. In the middle there are three barred cellar windows, followed by a series of seven band windows. Separated by a hard stone moulding, three broad windows follow directly, some still with iron glazing bars. A broad lintel spans these tall windows, the middle one being the broadest. Behind this double window section is the former office space. The storey above has seven oblong sash windows. The three-storey section on the right marks the entrance and has a double entrance under an overhang on decorative brackets and to the right a small window. Both this window and the three barred upper-storey windows have a broad natural stone surround. The right door gives access to the upper floor, with a tall window and a four-light window on the first storey, and above that three windows. The tall right section is designed in a monumental manner. The corner is partly rounded and partly bevelled, accentuated by natural stone blocks. The front has a decorated iron flagpole holder with mast, behind it the side facade is carried high towards the chimney sections.
Via a few steps one reaches the varnished double doors and the draught vestibule. This, like the rest of this storey, is fitted with variegated floor tiles in a weave pattern. The space behind and beside it has a high tiled dado in black, green and variegated in Art Deco forms. The large counter on the left rear is also completely tiled. Niches and corners show where counters and the like once were. Above part of the space a rectangular opal glass ceiling panel has been installed.
Valuation.
The building is of general importance. It has cultural-historical value as an example of socio-economic development, and is also important as an example of the typological development of the bank building. It is significant for the history of architecture because of its style and in the oeuvre of both architects Ouendag and De Nijs.
