Introduction.

The ST. CATHARINA CHAPEL is situated on the inner grounds of the nursing home, for which the prayer room was built in 1894-1895. The chapel was designed in Neo-Gothic style by C. van Genk and in 1933 extended in the same style with two bays by the brothers Oomen, whereby the front facade was simplified.

Description.

The single-aisle chapel has a cruciform ground plan with a nave of six bays, a roof turret and a three-sided closed apse of two bays. The facades are constructed of machine-made brick, with slate in Maas bond on the gabled roofs. The walls are articulated by a dentil moulding, between buttresses with sandstone coping of the offsets. Sandstone is also used for the plinths, sills, corner blocks and coping mouldings. The entrance is situated in the west facade in a portal with columns and a cross in the tympanum above the double doors. On either side small pointed-arch windows, above them a large window with a quatrefoil above which is a pointed-arch niche with an image of Saint Catherine with the wheel. At the crossing is located the openwork octagonal roof turret with pointed roof, in the transept is a triple window. The apse is furnished with a facade stone, which has become completely illegible through weathering. The interior is articulated by small columns with cross-rib vaults of plasterwork on laths. The three-sided choir closure has a fan vault. The original polychromy of the walls has disappeared. The colourful stained-glass windows depict the female saints on the left of the altar and in the apse, the male ones on the right. In the apse Barbara, Clara and Juliana are depicted alongside Christ. In the transepts visions are depicted, on the left among others Bernadette and the Virgin Mary, Saint Lutgardis and Joanna of Chantal. On the right Saint Antonius and Francis of Assisi. In the western section by the organ, Saint Cecilia and centrally Christ, God and the Holy Ghost. Particularly striking are the polychromed plaster Stations of the Cross, signed by F. de Vriendt and the rich and refined carved wooden eight-sided pulpit in Neo-Gothic style, the high altar with woodcarving and plaster reliefs and the altar table. Various wooden figures from the last decade of the nineteenth century stand arranged along the walls, thematically adapted to the stained-glass representations. In the nave stand the oak church benches, decorated with trefoils and crosses. All this church furniture is from the hand of C. van Genk. The choir gallery has a wooden trefoil balustrade. Beneath this is a space with a statue of Mary. Organ and organ case are not of value from the perspective of heritage care.
