The register's description

Inleiding.

Introduction.

Within the built-up area of Haaren, a Roman Catholic CHURCH of Sint Lambertus, constructed between 1912 and 1914 in Neo-Gothic forms to the design of architect W. Th. van Aalst. The church replaced a Neo-Classical predecessor which burned down in 1911. In 1940, very rich figurative paintings were applied to the vault by the painter Jos ten Horn.

Description.

Three-aisled oriented Neo-Gothic cruciform basilica with tower and roof turret under saddle, hipped and sloping mansard roofs covered with slates in Maas format. The church is a brick construction with ornamental elements in natural stone. The nave has three bays. The transept has three-sided closures. The choir, situated on a raised level, has one bay to which a 7/12 closure adjoins.

The tower has four stages. In the first the set-back entrance portal with a pointed arch window with trefoil motifs, in the second blind niches and above the set-back entrance a three-part pointed arch window. In the third stage four partly opened as windows pointed arch niches and a bell stage with four niches of which the two inner ones serve as sound openings. Each stage has rich arch friezes or brick decorative mouldings. The octagonal spire rises from four gables with clock faces behind a balustrade. On the corners simple chamfered right-angled buttresses which end in pinnacles. To the left and right of the tower multisided side chapels under hipped and tent roofs covered with slate. The short nave has wide bays, in the side aisles three-part windows and in the clerestory triplets in pointed arch niches. The transept and choir bay also repeat this layout. The second and third bays of the nave have towards the transept polygonally closed side chapels which create a centralizing effect. Transept and choir have in the closure slender two-part pointed arch windows. The choir is flanked by chapels and ancillary spaces such as, among others, the sacristy. Both are constructed in a traditional Neo-Gothic style. Internally, through the short, wide nave with chapels and the wide crossing, a centralizing effect is achieved, whereby in this otherwise traditional late Neo-Gothic church the view of the altar is reasonably good. Nave, transept and choir have a three-part elevation with round stone and polished columns with white natural stone capitals with foliage motifs and simple scissor arches.

The triforium consists of a series of blind niches with natural stone small columns, set in a rectangular surround under the triplet windows. The crossing pillars are of natural stone. The entire building is vaulted with brick star and net vaults with for Van Aalst characteristic wide and flat vault ribs and ribs. The masonry is partly fair-faced brickwork, partly rendered. The church contains furnishings from the construction period. The high altar (1917), the Mary altar (1917), the pulpit (1918) and the communion rail (1918) in Neo-Gothic forms are executed in copper and marble by A.H. Haan from Antwerp. The rood cross dates from 1918, a set of eight sculptures from around 1930. The stained glass windows were executed by I. Menken from Gogh (1914). On the vaults are exuberant paintings with a rich iconography inspired by the Revelation of the apostle John, executed by the painter Jos ten Horn (1940-1942).

Evaluation.

The church is of general importance. It has cultural-historical values as a particular expression of a spiritual development in the Catholic Church whereby within the typology of the village church, the appreciation for a traditional design of church architecture continues to exist. The church is also important because of the particular vault paintings by J. ten Horn. It has architectural-historical values because of its characteristic place in the oeuvre of architect W. Th. van Aalst, who within the neo-gothic formal language experimented with a centralizing floor plan. It is well preserved, both as regards interior and exterior.
