Omschrijving

Description
Description
RESIDENTIAL BLOCK situated on the east side of the Kazernestraat between the 1e Mussenstraat and the Klarendalseweg, consisting of a row of eight dwellings (numbers 4-18). The dwellings are paired two by two with coupled stepped gables alternating on the front and rear sides. Because the terrain slopes in a southerly direction, the roof ridge line steps up once in height halfway along the block. The dividing wall between the dwellings is here carried up above the roof and executed as stepped gables with a terminating chimney. The roof thus consists of two gabled roofs lying end to end with hip cappings at the location of the stepped gables on the front and rear sides. Five chimneys are placed on the ridges which are terminated by several courses of laid brickwork. The roofs are covered with red improved Dutch tiles and water off via wooden gutters on corbels. The stepped gables are terminated by profiled wind boards. If the dwellings on the front side have a stepped gable, then a broad flat-roofed wooden roof dormer is placed in the rear wall (three coupled casement windows). The reverse applies likewise. The red brick facades are laid in header bond. The entrance frame is, like all wall openings, closed off by a roll course.
Each dwelling has in the FRONT FACADE a large rectangular window with two coupled sash windows (originally with sliding multi-pane lower and upper frames) and a recessed entrance section with bevelled corner and closing wooden lintel with cut lead slabs. In this shallow porch (coupled in pairs) is located a clamped door with flanking sidelights and a narrow window (pivoting lower frame, tilting fanlight) in the bevelled corner. The dwellings with coupled stepped gables on the front side have here a broad rectangular window with four coupled single-pane windows. The SIDE FACADES have a sash window in the first storey on the street side.
All dwellings have in the REAR FACADE a large rectangular window with two or three coupled windows (casement and/or sash windows with fanlights). The rear door is placed in a non-original extension beside this window. Above the flat roofs of said extensions are small casement windows. The dwellings with coupled stepped gables on the rear side have here a broad rectangular window with four coupled single-pane windows.
Valuation
RESIDENTIAL BLOCK from 1910-1911, consisting of a row of eight dwellings.
- Of architectural-historical value as a good and well-preserved example of a row of workers' dwellings with a traditional main design and carefully detailed architecture. The main form and facade articulation have been well preserved. The object is a good example of the work of the architect J.H. DE ROOS (1875-1942) and W.F. OVEREYNDER (1875-1941) and of particular significance for the oeuvre of this architectural practice.
- Of urban-planning value as an essential component of the residential complex "Mussenberg", whose small-scale design is inspired by garden city principles.
- Of cultural-historical value as a particular expression of the progressive situation in Arnhem in the field of workers' housing, which is connected to the Housing Act of 1902 (attention to workers' housing, emergence of housing associations), familiarity with foreign modern urban planning visions and the attraction of qualified architects.
