Inleiding.
GRAFMONUMENT met kelder uit ca. 1873 gemaakt door beeldhouwer Josephus Adrianus van Genk ter nagedachtenis aan zijn oom de Ettense arts Dr. Antonius van Genk (1797-1872) en zijn vrouw Adriana Kievits (1802-1859) Antonius van Genk was een bekende genees-, heel- en verloskundige in Leur. Het grafmonument bestaat uit een onder- en bovenbouw.
Aan de voet van dit graf ligt het eenvoudige grafmonument van de zoon van de broer van bovengenoemde arts, de bekende Ettense kerkenbouwer architect Petrus Johannes van Genk (1844-1919). Dit graf behoort echter niet tot de bescherming.
Omschrijving.
De onderbouw van het grafmonument met grafkelder heeft een hardstenen deksel. Op de schuine voorkant van het deksel, in reliëf gebeeldhouwd, een lauwerkrans met palmtak doorstoken. De bovenbouw is een beeldhouwwerk bestaande uit een centraal staande stèle waarop onder andere de namen van de overledenen echtgenoten in bas-reliëf staan weergegeven. De stèle, die een ronde bovenkant heeft is bekroond door een kruis en behangen met rozen. Aan de voet ervan staat een doodskist met daarop de bij het beroep van een arts behorende attributen, zoals een staf met esculaap, een opengeslagen boek (wellicht een verhandeling van Hippocrates of Gallileï), vijzel (voor het bereiden van medicijnen), een haan (symbool van waakzaamheid) en twee lauwerkransen. Naast de stèle staan links een engel met opgeheven handen en wijzend naar de naam van de overledenen en rechts een beeldengroep voorstellende: een jonge vrouw met kind op schoot, achter haar staand een buigende jongeling en aan haar voeten een lamme grijsaard met krukken. Mogelijk symbolisch de patiëntenkring van Van Genk voorstellend. Deze groep treurt over het heengaan van hun arts. Het grafmonument is niet zichtbaar gesigneerd door de maker.
Waardering.
Het gaaf bewaarde grafmonument is van algemeen belang vanwege de cultuurhistorische waarde als vertegenwoordiger van de typologische ontwikkeling van het grafmonument in de late 19de eeuw met een symboliek die op het beroep van de overledene betrekking heeft. Het is tevens van architectuurhistorisch belang als voorbeeld van het werk van de beeldhouwer Van Genk.

FUNERARY MONUMENT with vault from circa 1873 made by sculptor Josephus Adrianus van Genk in memory of his uncle the Etten physician Dr. Antonius van Genk (1797-1872) and his wife Adriana Kievits (1802-1859). Antonius van Genk was a well-known physician, surgeon and obstetrician in Leur. The funerary monument consists of a substructure and superstructure.
At the foot of this grave lies the simple funerary monument of the son of the brother of the aforementioned physician, the well-known Etten church architect Petrus Johannes van Genk (1844-1919). This grave, however, does not belong to the protection.
Description.
The substructure of the funerary monument with grave vault has a hardstone cover. On the sloping front of the cover, carved in relief, a laurel wreath with palm branch pierced through. The superstructure is a sculptural work consisting of a centrally standing stele on which, among other things, the names of the deceased spouses are depicted in bas-relief. The stele, which has a rounded top, is crowned by a cross and hung with roses. At its foot stands a coffin upon which are the attributes belonging to the profession of a physician, such as a staff with the serpent of Asclepius, an open book (perhaps a treatise by Hippocrates or Galileo), pestle (for the preparation of medicines), a rooster (symbol of vigilance) and two laurel wreaths. Next to the stele stand on the left an angel with raised hands pointing to the name of the deceased and on the right a sculptural group depicting: a young woman with child on her lap, behind her standing a bowing youth and at her feet a lame old man with crutches. Possibly symbolically depicting the circle of patients of Van Genk. This group mourns the passing of their physician. The funerary monument is not visibly signed by its maker.
Valuation.
The well-preserved funerary monument is of general importance because of its cultural-historical value as a representative of the typological development of the funerary monument in the late 19th century with symbolism relating to the profession of the deceased. It is also of architectural-historical importance as an example of the work of sculptor Van Genk.
