Omschrijving
Inleiding

Description
Introduction
The former LATIN SCHOOL annex SEMINARY was built in two phases (1884 and around 1900) in neogothic style after designs by architect E.J. Margry. The Latin school, founded in Megen in 1645, attracted pupils from across the country. From 1884 onwards the town hall of Megen was temporarily housed in the building. Today it functions among other things as a community centre and dental practice. The tall and broad building consists of five wings and, together with the adjacent seventeenth-century Franciscan monastery, already protected, dominates the Kloosterstraat and its surroundings.
Description
Before the extension from around 1900, the two-storey building situated at the corner of Kloosterstraat and Wilhelminastraat had an h-shaped floor plan. The actual school building consists of three wings arranged around an inner courtyard. The main facade faces Kloosterstraat. Because the building line of this facade recedes considerably, a small square (Everardusplein) has come into being. On the northern side this square is bounded by the also part of the complex, adjacent former town hall with chapel above. All buildings have gabled roofs, which are covered with slate in Maas covering and provided with neogothic roof dormers. The brick facades are all two storeys and provided with buttresses, once cut, per two bays. The facades facing Everardusplein have a hardstone plinth, a hardstone drip moulding, rendered bands and a hardstone moulded gutter with water spouts. The school building has nine window bays and is provided with a striking central projection, in which a natural stone portal with doorcase (renewed door and fanlight), above which a hardstone plaque (against which a new plate with the inscription "Acropolis" is affixed), six-pane sash window and the top gable crowned by a hardstone cross with limestone statue of St. Antonius are placed. All other windows in this facade are also six-pane sash windows. Under the segmental arch a pressed stone mosaic has been placed. The building is crowned by a square open-work roof turret with spire. The gable end facing Wilhelminastraat has a hoist beam with hatch in the top gable. The rear two perpendicular brick wings with classrooms also date from 1884 and are soberly executed with muizetandlijsten and six-light windows. The hall of the current community centre on Wilhelminastraat has two leaded glass windows, depicting St. Francis and Mary. In the wing perpendicular to the school building facing Everardusplein (also from 1884) with six window bays, a residential dwelling was housed in the western half, the town hall in the eastern half. The dwelling is on the ground floor and has three window bays. Next to the two T-windows, a panelled door with hardstone doorcase and fanlight is placed on the far right. The former town hall consists of a basement, which is accessible via a clamped carriage gateway and door in the gable end facing Wilhelminastraat. From Everardusplein a hardstone stair portico with iron railings leads to the mezzanine with T-windows. Above the portico is a hardstone plaque, on which a laurelled helm, dog and empty coat of arms. The artificial stone lintels of the windows of the town hall and the two lights provided with thief bars of the basement have, in contrast to all others, a classicist design. In the gable end facing Kloosterstraat, above the said carriage gateway, four T-windows of the mezzanine are placed (of which the leftmost at the stair portal is blind). The storey is entirely occupied by a neogothic chapel. The windows are all provided with limestone tracery, per harness consisting of a double trifoliate lancet, crowned by a quatrefoil. The windows and the eight-lobed rose in the gable end facing Kloosterstraat have ornamental leaded glass panels. The school building was extended around 1900 on the Wilhelminastraat side with a two-storey wing under flat roof, also in neogothic style. This wing is placed parallel and at only one metre distance from the existing rear building. Worthy of note is the wrought-iron spear-point railings with gate and brick piers, set on a brick plinth on Kloosterstraat.
Valuation
The building is of general importance. It has cultural-historical values as a testimony to spiritual and educational development, in particular the manner in which education was given to boarding school pupils in Megen in the nineteenth century by religious, who were housed in private boarding houses. It is also important as an example of the typological development of the small boarding school. It has architectural-historical values through its scale, style and as an example of the work of architect Margry. It has ensemble values, because it partly determines the appearance of the old centre of Megen, it is located within the nationally protected townscape. It has been well preserved.
