Inleiding

Porseleinvleugel: eerste verdieping sterk gewijzigd.

Waardering

Museumgebouw van algemeen architectuurhistorische en cultuurhistorische waarde:

- vanwege de rijke, verzorgd uitgevoerde gevels in Neo-Hollandse Renaissancestijl;

- vanwege de bewaarde interieurs, met name de schilderijenzaal, de twee zuilenzalen en de stijlkamers;

- vanwege het iconografische programma van de gevels, dat verband houdt met de culturele geschiedenis van Friesland (Turfmarkt 24) en Nederland (gevels aan de Koningsstraat);

- als representatief voorbeeld van een museumgebouw uit het eind van de negentiende en het begin van de twintigste eeuw;

Introduction

Extension of the FRIES MUSEUM in an L-shape around an inner courtyard behind the existing Eysingahuis (opened as a museum in 1881) with the main façade on the Turfmarkt and a façade on the Koningsstraat, commissioned by the Fries Genootschap and designed by H. Kramer, J. Bruns and J.D. van der Weide in 1891-1892 in Neo-Dutch Renaissance style. This accommodated the library, the print cabinet and the painting gallery. In 1895 a wing for the porcelain collection followed on the Koningsstraat. In 1907 two houses located between the Eysingahuis and the porcelain wing were purchased to make room for the Bisschop-Swift collection in a building designed by Kramer. In 1924 this wing was extended with an attic storey. Initially the wing on the Turfmarkt had no entrance (which remained in the Eysingahuis). In the mid-1970s the museum was extended with three buildings on the north side, with the entrance relocated to Turfmarkt 24. The three windows that were originally on the ground floor here were converted into passages. During an extension in the 1990s the original windows were restored and the entrance was relocated to the opposite side of the street in a new building next to the Kanselarij.

Description

EXTERIOR: Façade Turfmarkt: three storeys, three bays wide with a stepped gable in light brown brick with hard stone and sandstone cordon bands, strips and blocks. The ground floor has a natural stone plinth above which are three windows with six-paned casements, closed upwards by hard stone lintels, spanned by segmental arches, which have diamond bosses in the middle. A hard stone cordon band separates the storeys. The second storey has three four-pane cross windows, closed by basket arches whose fields are filled with tile tableaux, containing the names of Schelte à Bolswerd, Gysb. Jacobs and Wybrand de Geest. The arch fields of the otherwise identical windows of the third storey contain the heads of these persons. The top gable has in the middle a four-pane window with intertwined letters FG (Friesch Genootschap) in the arch filling, flanked by two rounded arch shell niches. On the steps of the façade sit sandstone wing pieces and spheres on hard stone plates. The top pilaster carries a lion holding a shield. The top gable is interspersed with natural stone bands. The hipped roof has muted barrel tiles. Façades on the Koningsstraat: the porcelain wing of one bay wide and two storeys on a basement with a stepped gable. Natural stone plinth in rustication with a row of basement window, furnished with wrought iron grille work, closed by a segmental arch. On the storey a large three-light window, closed by a segmental arch with a lion mask in the middle of the arch. On either side of the window coupled, mortared pilasters on the corners. In the frieze above the pilasters four sculpted tableaux are incorporated with portraits and profile by orange branches crowned of King William I, William II, William III and Queen Wilhelmina. Above each a royal crown. The second storey has a large three-part window with above it a semicircular arch field, filled with a grid of brick and natural stone blocks. In the middle the year MCCCXCIV is chiselled in natural stone cartouche. Here too coupled pilasters on the corners, this time crowned by winged cherub heads. In the top gable a shell niche of natural stone. Stepped gable is a sober variant of the façade on the Turfmarkt. The hipped roof is covered with muted Lucas IJsbrand tiles. The façade of the Bisschop-Swift collection is much simpler and adjoins the side façade of the Eysingahuis: basement storey of hard stone with above it a storey with five tall, narrow windows. The second storey has on the left a three-light window with a segmental arch and on the right a similar spandrel, which contains two portrait heads, depicting Charles V and his wife Isabella from 1526 (from a building on the Schapenmarkt). Simple cornice and flat roof.

Façades on the inner courtyard: Turfmarkt 24 has on the first storey rounded arch closed, modified windows and on the second storey similar blind windows of the painting gallery. The corner between the Turfmarkt wing and the porcelain wing has been heavily altered by the installation of a lift and a staircase on the inner courtyard. The porcelain wing has on the ground floor and on the storey cross windows closed with segmental arches. The Bisschop-Swift wing has on the storey four narrow windows and on the second storey a large three-light window. On the later added attic storey a window strip in Amsterdam School forms. The inner courtyard is now completely roofed and serves as a restaurant.

INTERIOR: Turfmarkt 24: ground floor entirely modified, first storey entirely modified and now contains office spaces, second storey contains the painting gallery, which is in virtually pristine condition: rectangular hall with a coved ceiling with moulded framework.

Porcelain wing: first storey heavily modified. In the Mata Hari hall four cast iron columns arranged in a square were preserved, which support the ceiling, consisting of trough vaults. On the second storey there is a similar construction in the costume hall, which for the rest is also heavily modified.

Bisschop-Swift wing: first storey entirely modified, except for the beam ceiling, now museum café. The second storey is still entirely in its original state and contains two period rooms. On this wing an attic storey was added in 1924 on the side of the inner courtyard.

Valuation

Museum building of general architectural-historical and cultural-historical value:

- because of the rich, carefully executed façades in Neo-Dutch Renaissance style;

- because of the preserved interiors, particularly the painting gallery, the two columned halls and the period rooms;

- because of the iconographic programme of the façades, which relates to the cultural history of Friesland (Turfmarkt 24) and the Netherlands (façades on the Koningsstraat);

- as a representative example of a museum building from the end of the nineteenth and the beginning of the twentieth century;

- as an example of a building designed by three prominent Leeuwarden architects from the period around the previous century's turn.
