Inleiding

Waardering

TRANSFORMATORHUISJE gebouwd in ca. 1922.

Introduction

TRANSFORMER STATION built circa 1922, constructed under the influence of the Amsterdam School on commission of N.V. 'Electriciteits Maatschappij de Berkelstreek' (E.M.B.), which gradually proceeded to replace the outdated transformer columns with brick transformer stations. The striking reed-thatched roof and the transformer window tapering upwards indicate that architect B. Beeftink from Lochem sought stylistic connection in the design with the adjacent former head office of the E.M.B., which was also designed by him. The transformer is located on the north side of Burgemeester Bloemersstraat, diagonally opposite the weir in the Berkel.

Description The TRANSFORMER STATION is built on a rectangular floor plan and has one storey under a far-overhanging reed-thatched hipped roof with curved roof tiles. The roof ridge of the building, covered with a red frost tile, runs perpendicular to the road. In the right roof slope there is a semi-circular dormer, over which the reed covering is carried through. The dormer is fitted with a wooden infill with a segmentally shaped attic hatch at the top. The small building is constructed in brickwork and with regard to the transformer window laid in Flemish bond and the wall sections above it are laid in half-brick bond. A darker brickwork type is used for the transformer window closed off by a roll layer. The facades are finished with one-and-a-half brick header course. Both in the transformer window and in the wall section above there are on each facade two ventilation grilles (below in upright brick without joint, above in iron). The FRONT FACADE is symmetrically arranged and has a door in the centre (on a hardstone threshold and frame on stone supports) with above it brickwork lettering indicating the name of the company (/E.M.B/).

The LEFT FACADE is identical to the right one and except for the ventilation openings is blind. The REAR FACADE has a horizontally closed window fitted with (2x5) glass blocks. The roof overhang is supported on the left and right sides by a pair of roof struts from ground level. The RIGHT FACADE is identical to the left one. The original equipment in the INTERIOR was already replaced in 1956.

Valuation

TRANSFORMER STATION built circa 1922.

- Of architectural-historical importance as an example of a transformer station in Amsterdam School style; the transformer station is significant as a good example of the development of the transformer house in the first decades of the twentieth century. The exterior of the transformer station stands out through special (aesthetic) qualities, such as harmonious proportions and fine detailing. This is particularly expressed in the carefully executed brickwork and the reed-thatched roof. The small building is moreover a good example of the work of architect B. Beeftink, based in Lochem.

- Of urban-planning importance as part of a historically grown urban area and plays a character-defining role in it. The transformer station has ensemble value in relation to the surrounding built environment. The building is part of a characteristic series of small villas built in the period 1910-1940 on the section of Burgemeester Bloemersstraat between Spoorstraat and Beethovenstraat. In conjunction with the adjacent park and the Berkel stream with islands and weir, this whole forms a historical cityscape characteristic of Borculo from the first decades of the twentieth century.

- Of cultural-historical importance because of its function, which is connected with a technical development. The transformer station is furthermore significant as a reminder of the electrification of the city of Borculo.
