Omschrijving
Inleiding
- als bijzondere uitdrukking van de hygiënische ontwikkeling in Friesland na de uitvaardiging van het 'décret impérial sur les sepultures' (1808);
- als vroeg voorbeeld van een 'buitenbegraafplaats' in Friesland op grond van dit decreet;
- als bijzondere uitdrukking van de grafcultuur uit de periode van de Romantiek;
- vanwege de herinnering aan een vooraanstaande Friese familie;
- vanwege de redelijk hoge mate van uitzonderlijkheid van dit type begraafplaats binnen de provincie Friesland;
- vanwege de hoge mate van gaafheid.

Description
Introduction
The CEMETERY, also known as Nieuw Hof, of the Buma family consists of GATE PIERS and a simple layout with 57 GRAVESTONES from the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries (65 burials). The cemetery was laid out in the winter of 1825-1826 as a private cemetery on the Buma family's land, west of Weidum, but within the protected village conservation area. The gate piers were built in 1928 by J.P. Schat, including the head section; the iron fencing was supplied by M. Eerligh. The heraldic lions date from the 19th century (1826).
Based on the family coats of arms on the piers of the cemetery entrance, Bernhardus Buma (1770-1838) and Roline Maria Hora Siccama (1773-1826) can be identified as the founders. Bernhardus Buma was grietman of Baarderadeel and lived at Nieuw-Bornia (demolished 1865) in Weidum. Lady Roline Maria Hora Siccama had already stipulated in her will in 1820 that she wished to be buried not in Leeuwarden, but in Weidum on a piece of open land. On her sickbed she clarified her wish: "on a piece of land located there (namely in Weidum) which is not far away, but also not on the daily walk." Its establishment fits entirely within the tradition of Romanticism and is the result of the "Décret impérial sur les sépultures" which was issued on 7 March 1808 (no. 3177, Bulletin des Lois no. 184) following the incorporation of the Netherlands into France. This imperial decree stipulated that it was henceforth forbidden to bury in churches and within the built-up area. The local nobility could provide for their own 'exterior cemetery' by setting aside a plot for this purpose on their own land.
Roline Maria Hora Siccama was the first to be buried in the cemetery (1826), followed by her husband Bernhardus Buma (1838).
Their son Wiardus Willem Buma subsequently determined who was eligible for burial in the cemetery, the costs thereof, and stipulated that within a year of a burial the grave had to be covered with a hardstone slab of a fixed size (200 x 70 cm) and with an inscription following the example of the existing gravestones, which had been designed by him. The grave monuments are almost exclusively horizontal slabs. The slabs are provided with a family or alliance coat of arms (one-third of the slab) and/or an inscription. Four slabs are signed by the firm Hofstra, stonemason from Sneek.
After 1873 the cemetery came under the supervision of the Bumaleen. The accounts show that regular maintenance was carried out. The last layout and maintenance plan for the planting dates from 1956 and is by Miss Boon from Hoogezand; garden maintenance has been carried out since 1971 by the firm Beek from Leeuwarden. The slabs were restored by De Vries stonemasons from Franeker.
The entrance section was restored in 1993 by the firm S.D. van der Vegt from Weidum and the firm Renaissant from Leeuwarden. Also, some old gravestones from Sneek (Fedde Wijbes Buma, buried 30 September 1722) and from the Westerkerk in Leeuwarden have been relocated to the cemetery.
Of the 57 gravestones, 26 date from the period 1826-1940; 27 gravestones date from after 1940, and six relocated gravestones date from the period before 1826.
Description
On a concavely mortared dam over a canal stand mortared gate piers (two-brick deep in square) of brown brick with natural stone head sections dated: ANNO 1826, on which are sculptured crowned lions holding shields with the family coats of arms of Buma and Hora Siccama. Between the piers a wrought-iron driveway gate with spear points and on the outside of the piers wrought-iron scroll decorations. In the cemetery lie five, north-south oriented rows, hardstone grave monuments (each approx. 200 x 70 cm); each grave monument is east-west oriented. Along the edges of the cemetery hardstone row numbers (1-5) and iron grave numbers (1-20).
Most slabs have a sculptured family coat of arms or alliance coat of arms and a short inscription with the name of the deceased.
The layout of the cemetery consists of an access path, paved with old, yellow street bricks and a raised and slightly domed plot with single planting, consisting mainly of ash, maple, beech and hawthorn.
Valuation
The cemetery from 1826, consisting of the layout with drainage dike, fencing and gravestones, is of general cultural-historical value:
- as a particular expression of hygienic development in Friesland following the issue of the 'décret impérial sur les sepultures' (1808);
- as an early example of an 'exterior cemetery' in Friesland based on this decree;
- as a particular expression of burial culture from the Romantic period;
- because of its connection to a prominent Frisian family;
- because of the reasonably high degree of uniqueness of this type of cemetery within the province of Friesland;
- because of the high degree of integrity.
