Inleiding
De vaste BRUG van gewapend beton ligt over de Franekervaart, een historische trekvaartverbinding tussen Sneek en Franeker. De brug is vermoedelijk gemaakt omstreeks 1925 in een modern bouwmateriaal, maar in een traditionele vormentaal, die verwijst naar de houten voetgangersbruggen, de zogenaamde hooghouten (Fries: heechhout), waarvan hij de opvolger is. De brug verbindt het dorp Welsrijp met een buurtschap dat genoemd is naar het eerdere hooghout. De betonnen brug is ter plaatse gestort en is monolithisch.
Omschrijving
De brug bestaat uit een onderbouw, waarop een brugvloer met balustrade; aan beide landhoofden zijn betonnen aanlandingen gestort; in de vaart staan aan weerszijden van de brug fragmenten van de houten meerpalen.
De brug heeft drie doorvaartopeningen, waarvan de middelste een doorvaarthoogte van 3,30 m heeft; de doorvaartbreedte is 6,25 m en de totale overspanning van de Franekervaart bedraagt ter plaatse ca. 10 meter.
De onderbouw bestaat uit twee massieve, trapezoïdale betonplaten, met een detaillering waarin een houtconstructie herkend kan worden: twee diagonale staanders met een staander en koppelbalk. Aan de doorvaartzijde is een geleidebalk bevestigd. De gesloten balustrade is geleed door betonnen en verhoogde penanten; tussen de penanten een ijzeren leuningbuis.
De penanten op de landhoofden zijn iets zwaarder en naar de vaart hellend uitgevoerd. Aan de oostzijde is een klaphek aangebracht. In het brugdek zijn metalen strips meegegoten.
Waardering
De betonnen voetgangersbrug, een zogenaamd hooghout uit ca. 1925, is van algemeen architectuurhistorisch en cultuurhistorisch belang:
- vanwege de traditionele brugtypologie, gepaard aan modern en experimenteel materiaalgebruik;
- vanwege het bijzondere materiaalgebruik en de detaillering;
- vanwege de hoogwaardige kwaliteit van de brug en de historisch-ruimtelijke relatie met de waterweg;
- vanwege de zeer hoge mate van gaafheid;

Introduction
The fixed reinforced concrete BRIDGE spans the Franekervaart, a historic towing canal connection between Sneek and Franeker. The bridge was presumably built around 1925 in a modern building material, but in a traditional formal language that refers to the wooden footbridges, the so-called heechhout (Frisian: heechhout), of which it is the successor. The bridge consists of a substructure, upon which a bridge deck with balustrade; concrete landings have been cast at both abutments; in the waterway fragments of the wooden mooring piles stand on either side of the bridge.
