Inleiding

Introduction

The FARMHOUSE of the stelp type was built in 1914 in craft-traditional building manner, designed by D. Meintema from Leeuwarden for the Meintema family. Attention to tradition, regional building types and building materials form a characteristic guideline in the architect's oeuvre.

The originally refined detailing of the glazing bars in the first storey of the dwelling house has suffered from adjustments to insulation requirements (double glazing) and uniform paintwork (white); the original shutters are no longer present. Numeral anchors in the front facade form the year 1914. The manner of arrangement of the livestock was changed in 1935 and has remained unchanged since then.

Falling outside state protection is the perpendicular extension of stable space from 1968. For this extension no large opening was made; the original windows are still present. The other outbuildings on the site (hay barn and wagon shed) also fall outside state protection due to insufficient architectural significance.

Description

The farmhouse has a rectangular floor plan and is constructed in brown brick, under an overhanging hipped roof with zinc gutter boards, covered with red unglazed hollow tiles; front and rear facades are built higher. On the ridge corner a chimney.

The front facade is built up from two buttresses to two storeys. In the first storey a two-light six-pane window with fanlights (stable) and three windows with double four-pane fanlights (living room). In the second storey the original two-light six-pane window with reinforced shutters.

The north gable of the dwelling section is set back under the hipped roof. The covered section has a floor paved with yellow clinker bricks; a window with two reinforced shutters and the door with nine-pane frame.

In the farm section the windows in the stable and the threshing floor are identical in form, two-light windows with cross glazing bar division. The south gable is partially overlapped by a new stable (1968). In the higher built rear facade a round-arched half-door; a barred small window (horse stable); two two-light windows, a reinforced stable door, a two-light window and a stable door. Below the gutter line four semicircular small windows on the hay loft. In the north gable four two-light windows.

The INTERIOR of the farmhouse is virtually entirely original: the layout is unchanged and among the original, valuable elements are the beam ceilings, in the living room a cabinet wall with fireplace in a shallow alcove; the walls white tiled in a lozenge pattern and borders with flower and leaf motifs on the corners and walls. Wooden stairs with railing and landing on the upper floor, with four bedrooms with original doors, cupboards and in one bedroom a wooden fireplace mantel with tiling in the fireplace. The stable is largely original; the valuable components include, among others, the wooden wall of the horse stable; the red-painted half-doors and the stable fixtures with tiling in chequerboard pattern of yellow and green tiles on the outer wall.

Valuation

The stelp farmhouse from 1914, built in traditional-craft building manner, designed by D. Meintema from Leeuwarden is of general architectural-historical importance:

- because of the particular importance of the farmhouse for the oeuvre of architect Doeke Meintema,

- as an early example of a reorientation towards regional building typology and building materials in Friesland,

- because of the high aesthetic quality of the design,

- because of the carefully considered and traditional material use and ornamentation,

- because of the high architectural integrity of both the exterior and in particular the interior.
