Inleiding

Description
Introduction
This MANSION with GARDEN GATE was built in 1900 on the corner of the Rapenburgsestraat and the Broekboomstraat on the instructions of Mr D. Hesselink, who was a notary in Lichtenvoorde. The architect of the building was L.G. Richter (1831 - 1902), from Leiden and resident in Winterswijk. The building came into the possession of the Buijnink family in 1912. The design of, among other things, the front door and the horizontal articulation by means of plastered ornamental bands indicates stylistic influences of the Neo-Renaissance.
The building is situated directly on the street and has a garden on the right and rear sides. On the Broekboomstraat side, there is in the garden a very old beech tree which is maintained by the Dutch Tree Foundation. Part of the garden is separated from the street by an original iron paling fence.
Description
The MANSION is built on an almost rectangular ground plan and has a recessed gable section the width of one window bay at the front of the building. The building has two storeys under an all-round and flattened hipped roof which is covered with suppressed corrugated Frisian tiles and suppressed Dutch tiles. On the roof are several original chimneys. The facades of the house are laid in Flemish bond and horizontally articulated by the all-round plastered plinth, the plastered and profiled cordline at the storey division, the plastered ornamental bands at the height of the lintels of the windows on both storeys and the all-round main cornice. This main cornice consists of a profiled architrave, a plastered frieze and a profiled gutter. It is striking that the frieze is provided with applied plaster decorations at the height of the window openings. Most of the windows of the house are executed as sash windows and provided with window sills in natural stone. All windows have arched lintels.
The FRONT FACADE has an asymmetrical layout. Of the five window bays, the outermost right bay is recessed. At this side the corner of the building is chamfered and provided with a corniced main cornice. The widest facade section in the building line has four window bays. In this is situated at the far right a carefully designed front door with iron door grilles, a tympanum-like decoration and some diamond-pane panels. The three sash windows to the left of the door and the sash window to the right of it are single-light and have a fanlight executed in leaded glass. Under the window lintels is a plastered ornamental band. The two outermost window openings in this facade section are provided with a plastered rooster-comb. The two window openings between them have a differently designed ornamental frame with a keystone. This layout is also continued on the upper storey. Here, however, the sash windows are still designed as T-windows. The roof surface has a roof dormer with a gabled roof, horizontal sliding window and wooden cheeks. The recessed facade section on the right has on the storey division a balcony on beautifully designed consoles. The balcony has a wrought-iron balcony railing. A double balcony door with a leaded glass fanlight opens onto the balcony. To the left of the balcony doors is a narrow window in the wall section at right angles to the front facade.
The LEFT SIDE FACADE has a window opening on the ground floor. The building is constructed almost immediately against the adjoining building so that this facade side has no further detailing.
The REAR FACADE has an asymmetrical layout. On the left is a double sliding door, provided with shutters and a leaded glass fanlight. To the right of this are the rear door, a T-window with a leaded glass fanlight with below it a rectangular basement window and a second rear door with a plain glass fanlight. On this side of the facade a barn was later built, the roof overhang of which abuts against the facade. The upper storey has an arched leaded glass window at the location of the rear door. To the right of this window are a T-sash window and a modern T-shaped window with a fixed pane. To the left of the stairwell window is a single T-shaped sash window. All windows in this facade have arched lintels with a plastered keystone. The gable corner is chamfered on the left side.
The RIGHT SIDE FACADE has a symmetrical layout with two window bays. On the ground floor and on the upper storey are two sash windows which are detailed in the same way as in the front facade. The right window on the upper storey has a T-shaped layout, the remaining windows have a single-light lower sash. The fanlights have a leaded glass filling. Against this facade adjoins the wrought-iron GARDEN GATE.
The INTERIOR of the house is well preserved and is characterized by a suite of rooms on the right side of the hallway and two adjacent rooms with a rear-lying kitchen on the left side of the hallway. The suite of rooms is provided with ornamented stucco ceilings with rosettes and fireplaces, whilst the rear room has a stuccoed fireplace mantel. This fireplace mantel is provided with two stuccoed pilasters connected to each other by a profiled moulding. The hallway has the original tiling and the fanlights of the windows are provided with leaded glass windows. The interior further contains the original panelled doors, the stair rail, internal shutters and window sills. In the kitchen the original fireplace and some kitchen cupboards have been preserved, among other things. The simple basement is provided with barrel vaults.
