Omschrijving
Inleiding

Description
Introduction
Complex consisting of a lock with two chambers, two bascule bridges and a lock keeper's house. The lock, called the third or Buinerverlaat, was originally a single lock, constructed in 1819. The lock was probably expanded in the first decade of the twentieth century on the northeast side (Hoofdstraat side) with a second lock chamber. At the lock on Hoofdstraat stands a lock keeper's house, which was built in 1908 after the existing lock keeper's house burned down. The house, which was constructed in a building style related to the Transitional style, was expanded in 1982 with a wooden garage which falls outside the protection. The lock has been renewed in parts over the years. In particular, the two bascule bridges over the lock were renewed in 1946 by the municipality of Groningen. On the dam between the two lock chambers a wooden material shed has been placed following the example of the original shed, which falls outside the protection. Around 1955 an electric pumping station was built at the lock on the Hoofdkade side which, due to insufficient age, temporarily falls outside the protection.
Description
LOCK with double lock chamber and double bascule bridge. The two masonry lock chambers with corner pieces and covering plates of basalt lava, are separated by a masonry dam with on both sides five masonry round arches which are closed with iron sluice gates; on the dam iron bollards. The small chamber (originally from 1819) has two masonry lock heads. In the northern (lower) head a pair of wooden lock gates with renewed handrails of tubular steel, and ratchets with rack rod and gearbox. In the southern (upper) head a pair of renewed steel lock gates with handrails of tubular steel and ratchets with rack rod and gearbox. This lock head has on the dam side two masonry round arches with iron sluice gates and on top an iron gearbox with rack rod.
The large chamber (constructed around 1910-1920) has two masonry lock heads, of which the northern head has a pair of wooden lock gates with handrails of tubular and angle steel and the southern head a pair of steel lock gates with handrails of angle steel. Both pairs of gates have ratchets with rack rod and gearbox. The upper heads of the large and the small chamber are equipped with granite sill sponsons with covering plates of basalt lava.
The two bascule bridges, not placed in line with each other, unequal-armed, have an asphalted wooden deck on INP main and intermediate beams. The bridge handrails consist of handrails and stiles of welded angle steel with rails of tubular steel. On both banks a masonry pivot circle.
Valuation
Double lock with double bascule bridge of general importance due to cultural-historical value
- as an example of an originally 19th-century single lock, of which in the nineteen-tens of the 20th century was made into a double lock
- due to the fairly rare iron lock gates of the upper heads
- due to the historical-functional relationship with the other locks in the canal and the lock keeper's house
- due to typological rarity in the province of Groningen
- due to the memory of peat excavations and flourishing shipping.
