Het FAMILIEGRAF van de familie Smit, die in Hoogezand een scheepswerf en machinefabriek bezat, bestaat uit 18 gietijzeren graftekens die waarschijnlijk zijn vervaardigd door gieterij Ten Oever, Koning & Co. te Foxham. De graven worden omgeven door een hekwerk met één beweegbaar deel, bestaande uit ijzeren regels en stijlen met gietijzeren punten tussen smalle vierkante hoekpijlers met punt, bevestigd op een aangesmeerde plint. De 18 staande zerken hebben alle dezelfde vormgeving: een platte schacht met voetstuk en kroonlijst, waarop een graftekst binnen een zwart geschilderde omlijsting; bovenop de kroonlijst een spits toelopende beëindiging waarop in reliëf een liggend ovaal, met een koord hangend aan een spijker; op het ovaal staan twee elkaar schuddende handen en de tekst: "tot wederziens". Description
The FAMILY GRAVE of the Smit family, who owned a shipyard and machine factory in Hoogezand, consists of 18 cast-iron grave monuments which were probably manufactured by the foundry Ten Oever, Koning & Co. at Foxham. The graves are surrounded by fencing with one movable section, consisting of iron rails and stiles with cast-iron finials between narrow square corner pillars with finial, mounted on a rendered plinth. The 18 standing grave stones all have the same design: a flat shaft with plinth and cornice, on which a grave inscription within a black-painted frame; on top of the cornice a pointed tapered finial with a relief representation of a lying oval, with a rope hanging from a nail; on the oval two hands shaking each other and the text: "till we meet again". On almost all shafts there is a relief representation of a skull. The oldest grave stone dates from 1855, the youngest from 1944.
