Beschrijving onderdeel 2:

Description of component 2:

PARK LAYOUT, consisting of the following components: a. drive b. park and forecourt c. pastures and orchards

Re a.: the avenue partly coincides with the Kasteelstraat and consists of two parts at right angles to each other; the east-west route begins at the village side at the entrance gate (see component 5) and ends at the Koestraat; this section was planted on both sides with oaks, of which only seven old, monumental specimens remain; on the vacant spaces now stand young plane trees. The second part of the avenue runs at a right angle from the aforementioned section straight towards the house and opens onto the forecourt; this section is planted on the left and right with a single row of young horse chestnuts. Both avenue sections have an asphalt surface.

Re b.: the park and forecourt lie on the land that formerly lay between the two moats; it is a strip of ground approximately 20 m. wide and is roughly square in shape. The outer moat dried up, respectively was filled in, in the previous century. On said land stand groups of old trees and solitary specimens, second half of the 19th century; here and there vague traces of a winding path that once made a circular walk possible; there are, among others, oak, beech, ash, maple and horse chestnut; furthermore some old conifers. As a park layout, the whole is very meagre. To reduce the nuisance from the motorway, around 1990 a 4 m. high embankment was constructed between the old trees on the west and south sides of the park land; this is visually extremely disturbing! The forecourt lies directly outside the moat to the north of the castle and to the east of the carriage house (see component 3); it has a neo-geometric layout of very recent date, consisting of four grass parterres with inset quarter-round corners, separated by broad gravel paths; in the middle stands a column with vase (see component 6); next to the two eastern parterres stand four spherical yew trees in a semicircular arrangement; they stand in the axis of the entrance gate of the carriage house and were probably planted in the beginning of the twentieth century.

Re c.: the rest of the complex lies outside the former outer moat and consists of gently sloping pastures in which remain remnants of orchards; the pasture to the north of the castle, situated between the Koestraat and the two branches of the drive, is entirely provided with rubble surfacing and now serves as a car park; the remaining pastures are very important as a visual and physical buffer between the castle and the village buildings; in the pasture to the south-west of the castle along the Koestraat there still stand 14 old standard cherry trees. The southern boundary of the complex is formed by an old winding unmade footpath, along which an old hawthorn hedge runs along its entire length.

Valuation

PARK LAYOUT of general importance

- because of the well-preserved structure of the constituent components

- because of the old trees as green framing of the castle

- as an important visual-landscape experience (paradoxically also from the motorway, which in itself is a disturbing factor).
