Description
Description of component 1: CASTLE.
Essentially late-medieval, now in mid-18th century form; the strictly symmetrical brick building consists of three rectangular blocks joined together at their short sides, each four windows wide; from the outer building blocks wings extend over half the width, two windows wide, projecting forward, embracing the forecourt, together with the two brick (Ijssel stone format) garden walls with slightly higher intermediate pillars, which project forward as an extension of the wings; on the division of the middle block and the two side blocks stand, half projecting onto the forecourt, two slender octagonal towers of five storeys under a steep pointed roof with eight roof sections and weathervanes and covered with slate; on the rear of the east tower a wooden bell cote; the building blocks each have two storeys on basements; the middle block has its own hipped roof, likewise with slate and corner chimneys with inset copper pointed caps; corner blocks with wings on an L-shaped ground plan under hipped roofs with slate and corner chimneys; quarter-round corner in the fork of the L-shape; doors in it as access to the wings; entrance section of the main block consists of two double glass doors under a balcony (19th century c-d) with heavy cornice supported by coupled cast-iron columns with fluting on high natural stone bases; eight-light windows on the ground floor, six lights on the first floor; the windows of the corner blocks all with glazing bars. The rear and side facades of the castle stand in the water: remnant of the former castle moat. The middle block has rusticated lisenes on the corners on the rear side and a balcony overhanging the water with zinc balusters (19th century c-d) across the full width of the rendered facade; in the middle of the roof sections of front and rear facade late 19th-century attics with clocks. Internally, among other things: stucco ceilings in Louis XV style and chimney mantels from various periods; room with Renaissance-style panelling.
