Description
(With the following, the description of the existing national monument Herengracht 77 lapses.)
Object: Herengracht 77; Korsjespoortsteeg 24 in Amsterdam: dwelling house with rear house
Introduction
Located on the corner of Herengracht and Korsjespoortsteeg, DWELLING HOUSE with REAR HOUSE from 1631. The dwelling house is characterised by a stepped gable and sandstone bands and blocks in the relieving arches. Restored in 1963 to designs by architect IJ. Kok.
Description
Corner building consisting of a dwelling house with front facade on the Herengracht and a small rear house with entrance on the Korsjespoortsteeg, which form a structural whole. The building, which is just over 11 metres long and 5.5 metres wide, has a cellar, two storeys and an attic storey with loft space, covered by a gabled roof perpendicular to the canal. In the right roof slope a small roof dormer with hoist door and hoist beam at the level of the rear house. The cellar under the front house has pot cellars against the front facade and side facade and an entrance on this side. The stepped gable on the Herengracht is decorated with natural stone bands, natural stone scroll stones in the frieze and large arch blocks in the arches above the windows and is crowned by a simple top pilaster. The facade has a masonry frontage from circa 1800, replacing an original wooden lower frontage. The entrance door with centre nail, oval cushions and lozenge-shaped cushions has a surround in Louis XVI style. Beside the door a single front step which adjoins the pot cellar to its left. The door has a fanlight with relief work, a 24-paned sash window to the left and a narrow twelve-paned side light to the right. The storey has two nine-paned sash windows. At attic level a recumbent three-part window with a shutter above. The right side facade has a slightly projecting storey on the sculptured beam heads of the beams running through the side facade. The side facade was plastered around 1800 with the exception of the pot cellar. The facade is finished here with a moulded gutter line. At the level of the front house, the storey has two windows to the right, a twenty-paned one on the lower storey and a sixteen-paned one on the storey. The rear house has a frontage with entrance door with fanlight and a twenty-paned sash window to the left. Access to the entrance is via wooden access stair with landing. On the storey a sixteen-paned window. The structure of the building and the original simple beam layers have been preserved, the original layout of front and rear house is still readily recognisable in the current building. Some of the original keystones with swan-neck profile, which were originally present under all beams, have been preserved. The roof, probably partially renewed around 1800, has curved-post roof trusses above which pine roof braces. In the front and rear house, among other things, spiral stairs have been preserved.
Valuation
Dwelling house on the corner of Herengracht and Korsjespoortsteeg, is of general importance on account of its cultural-historical, architectural-historical and building-historical value, particularly expressed in the decoration and construction of the house which are characteristic of the second quarter of the seventeenth century (such as the use of large arch blocks). The building has a layout characteristic for its building period and for Amsterdam with dwelling house on the canal and a rear house for separate occupation. The building has situational value on account of its image-determining corner location in the historic city centre of Amsterdam, where it also forms a marker of the historic urban planning structure.
