Omschrijving

Description
Description of the historic PARK LAYOUT (2)
The layout is characterized by the elongated plot structure in an east-west direction perpendicular to the Vecht, whereby the Weere is an important structuring element. The entire plot is surrounded by water. The basis is still formed by the 18th-century formal layout. A remarkable element in this is the entirely moated island approximately halfway along the plot. This may be of older origin. The house stands close to the road, as a result of which the drive is very short and the space in front of it limited. Originally the drive gate stood on the axis of the house, but with the early 19th- or late 18th-century landscaping of the garden it was moved to the south, as a result of which the drive now has a curved course. In front of the house stand five large linden trees. Along the north and south sides of the plot are two long avenues towards the rear. Along the north side the avenue has a straight course and is planted with chestnuts and beeches. Along the south side the avenue is laid out in a winding manner. On this side a small open space along the Weere has also been retained. The remains of a 19th-century fence indicate that it had a separate function. Behind the house lies on axis the former grand-canal, which has been dug out to a winding course and is now terminated in the form of a round pond. Exactly on the axis of the house, still before the pond stand two large oaks. The southern one is part of a large circle of oaks. It is possible that there was a counterpart on the north side, but the situation there has been disturbed by the construction of a number of garages after 1950. The grand-canal/the pond connects in the eastern direction to the moat of the island. At this point is located one of the wooden bridges (4). The other lies over the eastern moat of the island (5). On the island, which has been used as a kitchen garden, are located the wooden gardener's lodge dated 1754 and the cold frame. Moreover, there stands directly next to the access dam a very large solitary oak. In the literature it has been found that this would have disappeared, but this is incorrect. Due to the growth of other trees the oak is less clearly visible. The directly adjoining lands to the south and east and the narrow strip on the north side were still planted with fruit trees until the 1970s and thus in use as an orchard. Along the north side furthermore ran a pear avenue towards the rear. Of these fruit trees a few are still found scattered about, but most have disappeared. In the eastern meadow a small water feature has been laid out. This holds, together with the bridge over the eastern moat possibly a connection with a racecourse that was located here.
Valuation
The historic park and garden layout is of importance
- on account of the landscape design in which important parts of the 18th-century layout have been preserved.
