Inleiding
Het gebouw aan de Zevenpelzen 25 te IJlst is sinds 1911 door de Gebr. Bakker in gebruik als WINDMOTORENFABRIEK. Het pand werd in 1895 gebouwd in een Ambachtelijk-traditionele bouwtrant voor het scheepstimmerbedrijf J.J. Croles. In die tijd werden er ijzeren schepen in gebouwd. De laatste ijzeren Lemsteraak werd in 1899 gemaakt. Daarna ging het bergafwaarts met de fabriek: in 1911 werden de achterste loodsen verkocht en werd het scheepstimmerbedrijf door anderen voortgezet; het voorste gedeelte aan de Gebr. Bakker werd verkocht. Gooitzen en Tjerk Bakker hadden rond 1900 een mast-, blok- en pompmakerij aan de Zevenpelzen. Het verhaal gaat dat zij in die tijd bij toeval op informatie stuitten over een speciale windmotor, die in Chicago (U.S.A.) door Aermotor werd gebouwd. Getroffen door de vele voordelen van dit type "windmotor" lieten zij een exemplaar overkomen. Dit type windmotor bleek echter niet bestand te zijn tegen de Nederlandse weersomstandigheden, waarop zij besloten een eigen windmotor te ontwerpen. Er werden zeer veel exemplaren van gebouwd, die overal in de provincie werden geplaatst, en waarvan nog maar een klein aantal bewaard is gebleven. Een representatieve aantal daarvan is geniet bescherming als rijksmonument. In de fabriek van Bakker/IJlst vond ook het onderhoud van de windmotoren plaats, een activiteit die tot op de dag van vandaag in de loodsen van de firma plaats vindt. Naast het onderhoud, de reparatie en de bouw van windmotoren voert het bedrijf tegenwoordig ook werkzaamheden uit aan scheepsmotoren en levert het scheepsbenodigheden.
Het fabrieksgebouw ligt in het centrum van de stad, aan de noordzijde van de Zevenpelzen, die parallel aan het water -De Wijddraai- loopt. Het gebouw ligt parallel aan het water.
Omschrijving
De windmotorenfabriek heeft een rechthoekige plattegrond, is uit rode baksteen opgetrokken en wordt door een mansardedak gedekt. De voorgevel is, over drie lagen, symmetrisch ingedeeld door lichtgetoogde vensters met ijzeren roedenverdeling.
De zijgevels zijn voorzien van vergelijkebare maar grotere vensters. Aan de zuidkant staat op de zijgevel geschilderd: SCHEEPSBOUWMAATSCHAPPIJ, aan de noordkant WINDMOTORENFABRIEK-GEBR.s BAKKER.
Het traditioneel uitgevoerde gebintwerk is van hout. In het middengedeelte en in de smederij staan vooroorlogse machines die nog steeds voor de bouw van windmotoren worden gebruikt. Deze machines hadden via een centrale as en verschillende riemschijven een eigen aandrijving. Delen van de aandrijving zijn nog aanwezig, alsmede mallen voor wiekenraderen en tandwielen e.d.
Waardering
De WINDMOTORENFABRIEK te IJlst, gebouwd in 1895 als scheepstimmerwerf en vanaf 1911 bijde fa Bakker in gebruik als fabriek voor windmotoren van het type Record, is van algemeen bijzonder cultuurhistorisch belang:

Introduction
The building at Zevenpelzen 25 in IJlst has been in use as a WINDMOTOR FACTORY by the Gebr. Bakker since 1911.
