Omschrijving
WAARDERING
Van algemeen belang:

Description
THE OLD CASTLE EYMERICK WITH RETAINING WALL. According to the description in the register of the lien court of Brabant in Brussels, the castle formed at that time the centre of the lordship Heeze-Leende and must, besides the hall building, have comprised a substantially sized building situated nearby, as well as buildings situated to the left and right of the entrance gate and a ring wall. The location of the castle was strategically chosen in the triangle formed by the rivers the Aa and the Kleine Aa, which supplied water for the moat. In 1640 it was already mentioned that the castle was in a very dilapidated state. The new lord of Heeze-Leende, Albert Snoeckaert van Schauwenburg, decided in 1659 to build a new castle at the site of castle Eymerick. Because this plan was not carried out in its entirety, the hall building remained standing and the course of the moat has been preserved. The now remaining part of the castle consists of a rectangular, partially cellaraged, brick building of two storeys under pantile gabled roof between stepped gables, of which the lower part dates from the 15th, partially 16th century, the masonry above the cellars from the 17th century, when major repairs must have been carried out. The cross and rib vaults above the cellars also date from that period. In 1912 a major restoration was carried out, whereby amongst other things stepped gables were introduced, which at the restoration of 1975 were replaced again by pointed gables. The lower space has formerly not been internally connected with the hall situated above, which was only accessible via a staircase which was built against the front facade. A doorway in the middle of the facade which was still present before the restoration of 1913 testified to this. On the east side there are three windows on the ground floor and four on the storey, provided with semi-circular relieving arches and shutters which leave the upper part of the windows free. The building is the part of the castle which, judging from a drawing from 1663, was in use as a kitchen. On both sides of the former bridge, foundations are present and on the right a cellar of the old castle with wall thicknesses of 1.40 m, equal to those of the foundation of the hall building. The castle is situated on an initially irregularly shaped island, which from the 17th century onwards became part of the formal design of the moat and geometric gardens. At the north-east corner between hall building and coach-house/garage, a retaining wall following the moat with crenellations and gun-ports in the neo-gothic manner; this design dates presumably from the time of the restoration in 1913.
