Inleiding

In beide daklijsten drie gietijzeren rosetten.

Introduction

The premises of Webster University were built in 1869-1870 on behalf of the municipality of Leiden according to an eclectic design by the then municipal architect J.W. Schaap. The building, with its rear facade facing the Nieuwe Rijn, was originally a SCHOOL BUILDING with gymnasium for extended primary education (MULO) for girls. Subsequently it was taken into use as a club building, which it remained until 1985. The eclectic architectural style - with elements from the German Rundbogenstil - in which the school was constructed is typical of the period of construction and characteristic of the architect's oeuvre. The characteristics of Eclecticism are also carried through in the interior - which is still in a large part in its original state. The building forms part of the protected townscape of Leiden.

Description

Symmetrically arranged building consisting of five rectangular volumes (three oriented north-south, the two between them standing here perpendicular), constructed in brick with plastered, largely "fringed" mouldings above plinths of grey natural stone. All divisions with shouldered gables beneath gently sloping, zinc-edged hipped roofs with profiled gutter mouldings. Higher rising, projecting central section with upper storey. Within this an entrance in a porch with segmental arch opening and moulding of plastered brick above profiled, natural stone jambs. Around the upper part of the porch opening a profiled segmental arch with pilasters resting on corbels. Above the porch a tall crowning of the entrance moulding extending to the cornice.

In the porch a wing door standing above a hardstone step with large cast-iron door knobs and likewise cast-iron window grilles beneath a segmented two-light fanlight, all within a profiled wooden frame. On either side of the entrance a closed window with hardstone sill and transom above a window divided into three parts with round light at the crossing. Above it a narrow profile moulding connected to the start of the narrowing in the entrance moulding. Between this moulding and the likewise profiled, wooden cornice a plastered cassette with bevelled corners and profile moulding in which respectively 'anno' and '1870'. On the upper storey three segmented, opening six-light windows with around the upper lights a profiled segmental arch standing on corbels. Facade moulding in the form of pilaster strips with spandrels and a gable crowning of plastered brick in the form of a pediment, provided with a vaulted underside and a three-sided spandrel on either side of a circle. On the ridge of the profiled cornice a small, zinc-clad half-round wooden crowning with shoulder pieces (curved pediment). The side facades of the middle section are blind on the ground floor. On the upper storey of the eastern facade a rectangular six-light window beneath transom. On the upper storey of the western facade a round window above the ridge of the transverse wing. In both eaves three cast-iron rosettes.

Recessed facade sections with mezzanine above profiled cornice, flowing into the curves of the moulding of the entrance section. Entrance section with hardstone step and wing door beneath segmented fanlight with profile moulding on corbels. Standing on inset moulding sections a curved pediment with circle between three-sided spandrels. On either side of the entrance a closed window with hardstone sill beneath transom. Directly above these windows in the mezzanine round four-light windows with diagonal glazing bars. Plastered corner pilaster strips with spandrels. The eaves moulding runs through into the cornice of the central risalit.

Like the central facade section, the gable end facades of the outer volumes are projecting. They are identical to each other and provided with three coupled round-arch windows with hardstone sills, six-light panes with three-part round-arch fanlights with circular centre, profiled moulding and pilasters on either side of the middle window. Below the window section three double, plastered cassettes. Above the window section, within a diaper arch a five-sided stucco relief with baroque, floral decorations and a portrait in medallion within a profile moulding. Broad, plastered corner pilaster strips with spandrels and profiled termination. From the pilaster strips extending plastered facade cladding with profiled mirror/diaper arch. Facade termination as that of the middle section. The short side facades of these outer building sections are blind, the pilaster strips on this side flat. The long side facades are identical with slightly projecting, standing under steeply pitched roof middle section, in which two wing doors with three-light panes beneath a two-light intermediate window with broad, flat frames. Above the doors two coupled round-arch fanlights with circle in three-part window within profiled moulding. Above this entrance section, in the diaper arch a five-sided stucco relief with baroque, floral decorations within a profile moulding, comparable to that at the front. The plastered moulding of the middle section is likewise comparable to that at the front. In the facade sections on either side of the entrance sections a blind window with hardstone sill beneath a profiled mirror arch (shoulder arch). Only above the steep roof of the western facade two brick chimneys.

The facades on the Rhine side likewise step back in relation to each other. Outer gable end facades identical to those at street side.

Recessed facade sections with a window division as in the outer facades, however with corner pilaster strips as those in the recessed facade sections at street side. On the roof slopes above this a non-original roof dormer, each with flat roof and two segmental arch windows. Facade division of the middle section in the first storey as that of the others.

Facade division and detailing on the upper storey as that at street side.

The interior is still largely in its original state. Symmetrical entrance portal with opening portal doors with profile moulding and glazing bars in the door panes. Corridor with fine details in the form of corbel brackets on pilaster strips, profiled door mouldings (some with segmental arch), ceiling light with yellow and colourless glass within a glazing bar division, and original panelled doors. Perpendicular to the corridor standing library (former gymnasium) at the right (eastern) end of the corridor. This high space is provided with an iron roof truss structure with five single polonceau trusses. Detailing at partition walls and around the original doors in the remaining spaces largely in original state. At the service stairs to the upper storey and around the stairwell railings with carved stair balusters and cast-iron stair spindles on profiled wooden handrails.

Some of the spaces on the upper storey likewise still largely in original state. On the upper storey a ceiling light, comparable to that on the ground floor.

Valuation

The school building is of general importance due to its cultural-historical and architectural-historical value as a representative link in the development of school construction, which connects with developments in education in our country and as a good and virtually intact example of richly detailed eclectic architecture and as a characteristic work from the oeuvre of municipal architect Schaap. The architectural-historical value is increased by the intact coherence between interior and exterior.

Furthermore, the school building has situational value due to its special location on the Rhine.

The school is also of importance due to its recognizability and due to the great degree of integrity of interior and exterior.
