Inleiding

Introduction

The ARCHIVE BUILDING of the municipal archive of Leiden was built in the years 1891-1893 according to a design by D.E.C. Knuttel. With this, Leiden was the first city in the Netherlands to have its own building for the municipal archive. The archive building replaced the archive space in the attic of the town hall on the Breestraat. The building master of the archive building, which was funded from a bequest by former city council member and cloth manufacturer A.J. (Justus) Krantz, was the then city architect D.E.C. Knuttel, national master builder in the years 1892-1922. At the request of city archivist Mr. C.M Dozy, the building was constructed in a building style related to Neo-Gothicism, which was also characteristic of many building commissions initiated by the national government at that time. The original, 19th-century rear facade has been completely hidden from view since a major renovation and extension of the building in 1967. In 1996 an extension was added to the right side of the building. Of the original interior, virtually nothing has been preserved due to an equally major internal renovation in the same year and is therefore not significant for national monument protection. The archive building forms part of the protected townscape of Leiden.

Description

Building constructed in brick with natural stone details on an elongated floor plan with originally two and four storeys under gabled roofs covered with tiles with roof dormers; left building section with four storeys under gabled roof with roof dormers and right projecting building section with two storeys under transversely placed gabled roof. Two-part, asymmetrical front facade with ashlar frame with limestone edge, cordon line, speckled courses and rectangular rainwater downpipes with collecting tank. Projecting, three-bay wide right facade section - behind which originally the public and work spaces were located - with symmetrical window arrangement and corners chamfered outward. Rectangular windows on the ground floor with sash windows and adjoining, natural stone drip moulds under segmental and three-lobed arches with binding and starting stones. Likewise rectangular first-floor windows under three-lobed arches with sandstone tracery. Between the first floor and the gable top a thin, corbelled cordon line, on the left and right connecting to corbels, which also form the base of the pointed gable. Division of the top by means of chamfered outward, standing masonry, in the middle a compound window section of three pointed arch windows with thin brick muntins. Above that two blind, circular windows and on each side a blind pointed arch window. On the gable top a limestone drip line and a climbing series of constructed attic balustrades with pointed arches and chamfered outward, sandstone pinnacles. The middle pinnacle with wrought-iron crest. To the left of this facade section a bay with a projecting entrance portal. Portal with cut-off left corner under a chamfered outward corner baluster, parapet with pointed arch openings and sandstone pinnacle. A sculptured head of A.J. Krantz in the arch soffit of the closed pointed arch above the portal entrance with a panel door decorated with quatrefoils with togaed lintel. The window above the portal is like that on the first floor of the risalite. Facade termination in the form of constructed frieze with herringbone arches and a natural stone top edge.

Seven-bay wide facade section - behind which originally the archive storage spaces were located - to the left of the entrance with per bay two coupled, recessed windows with adjoining, natural stone sills with slope, thin constructed muntins and jambs with quarter-round profile. Windows on the ground floor under segmental arch, on the first floor under three-lobed arch, on the second floor under relieving arch and with pointed arch form on the third floor. On each side of the bays on the second and third floors vertical facade divisions in the form of chamfered outward lisenes with pinnacle crests. The bays are terminated alternately by a small pointed gable and a string course. Two of these gable tops with partly blind windows in climbing arch frieze and two with three coupled (blind) round arch windows and an oculus, furthermore with limestone drip plates and crests in the form of a cross flower. String courses with constructed herringbone arch frieze and a natural stone top edge.

Symmetrical, left end facade with slightly projecting central section and various, partly blind windows with three-lobed arches, round arches and pointed arches, projecting shoulders and a spout with herringbone arch form termination. On the right side facade of the risalite a single-axis stepped gable with windows as in the front facade of the risalite and a gable top with between the chamfered outward, pinnacle-crowned lisenes, narrow, blind round arch windows under a round, likewise blind oculus. The rest of the facade is largely hidden from view by new construction.

On the roof surfaces the original wooden roof dormer turrets with projecting, zinc-clad gabled roofs and shutters with hourglass motif. A firewall projects from the roof structure between the entrance bay and the left part of the building. The interior has been significantly altered over time, with virtually all special structural components and details lost. The rear side of the building has also been largely lost or hidden from view due to the renovations.

Valuation

The archive building is of general importance because of its cultural-historical value due to its original function as a home for the municipal archive and the pioneering role that the building had in this field.

The building is also of general importance because of its architectural-historical value as a particularly fine example of a well and richly detailed government building constructed in the neo-gothic style and as a representative work from the oeuvre of a leading architect.

It is also important because of its functional rarity and because of the integrity of the representative front facade.

The building has situational value as an essential, visually defining element of an area that is important from an urban planning perspective - the former city walls - and the spatial relationship to it.
