Inleiding

Introduction

The HBS for Girls at the Garenmarkt was designed in 1883 in an Eclectic architectural style by municipal architect J.W. Schaap. The design is exemplary of Schaap's oeuvre, which although showing diverse architectural-style variants, is dominated by plasterwork decorations.

The school building was constructed on the site of the Grote Ruïne, which had lain derelict since the gunpowder explosion of 1807. Various plans were considered for the site. Thought was given to a festival building, university building and residences, all in combination with a park. In 1883 both the HBS for Girls and the Municipal Gymnasium at Doezastraat (also by Schaap) were built. The National Museum of Natural History was subsequently inserted there. In 1886 the adjoining Van der Werfpark was laid out to a design by landscape architect Copijn. The HBS stands behind an iron fence with spikes and cast-iron balusters and now forms part of the protected townscape.

The sculpture of a girl's head in the pediment above the front facade refers to the original function of the building. The HBS forms together with the former Museum of Geology and Mineralogy the western facade of the square between the Garenmarkt and Korevaarstraat.

At a later stage a storey was added to the rear of the building.

Description

The HBS is constructed in red brick on a rectangular plan over two storeys, under a truncated hipped roof with anthracite-grey newly improved Dutch tiles. The front facade is enlivened by extensive plasterwork. Sober side and rear facades without ornaments. Flush six-light windows in timber frames under cockscomb mouldings with plastered keystones on all facades.

The five-axis symmetrical front facade (east) is articulated horizontally by a hardstone plinth, profiled drip mouldings, a frieze and a wooden cornice on brackets. Pilasters with false joints and spandrels articulate the facade in width and border the central projecting entrance section. At the height of the frieze, consoles crown the pilasters. The cornice projects with the pilasters. The entrance projection is terminated at the top by a pediment, with a wooden cordon moulding round the tympanum. In the tympanum a bust of a young woman on a medallion under a rounded cordon moulding between two plastered fields with diagonal false joints. The bust emerges from the volute-shaped ornaments that crown the window on the first storey.

The entrance consists of a porch containing a double wooden panelled door with glass behind decorative ironwork, under a fanlight.

The entrance portal has a sandstone frame with a segmental arch with ornamented keystones and springer stones. The windows in the entrance projection are provided with a profiled plastered frame. On the first storey a plastered profiled breast rail.

In the centre of the narrower five-axis left side facade (south) an entrance, consisting of a double wooden door with panes under a canopy. Above it large round-arch windows with decorative stained glass. Recesses in place of windows in the right two window bays.

The five-axis right side facade (north) is articulated principally by recesses. Also in the centre an entrance with a double glazed door under a large round-arch window.

Interior In the interior have been preserved among other things: the travertine floors, the main staircase from the nineteen-thirties, a passage at this staircase with profiled brackets and the original door posts.

Valuation

The HBS is of general importance because of its cultural-historical value because of the role it played in the development of the site of the Grote Ruïne, which had lain derelict since the gunpowder explosion of 1807.

The building is furthermore of general importance because of its architectural-historical value because of the eclectic design and the rich detailing. The design is moreover important as a characteristic example in Schaap's oeuvre.

The school building is of urban-planning importance because of the important role the building plays in the western facade wall of the square between the Garenmarkt and Korevaarstraat.

The exterior of the school is relatively intact.
