Inleiding
De WINKEL met BOVENWONING op de hoek van de Hogewoerd en Watersteeg werd in 1911 voltooid in opdracht van koekfabrikant B.H.J. Van der Linden, directeur van de firma H.M. Biesiot. Architect P.J. Perquin won met het ontwerp een door de gemeente uitgeschreven wedstrijd voor gevelontwerpen. Het pand is ontworpen in een aan de Art Nouveau verwante bouwstijl.
De natuurstenen elementen in de gevels zijn geleverd door de Nederlandsche Natuursteenhandel P.J.M. van Stokkum uit Rotterdam.
Het pand maakt deel uit van het beschermd stadsgezicht en is beeldbepalend gesitueerd op een hoek van de kruising van de Hogewoerd en de Watersteeg, alwaar het is verheeld met het pand Watersteeg 2.
Omschrijving
Winkel met bovenwoning in hoekpand van drie bouwlagen op een rechthoekige plattegrond, onder afgeknot schilddak met leien in Maasdekking, een hardstenen daklijst met spuwers en twee steekkappen. De gevels zijn opgetrokken in roomwitte verblendsteen met speklagen van bronsgroen geglazuurde baksteen. Schuifvensters boven hardstenen waterdorpels, onder tweedelige bovenlichten met glas-in-lood en kalkzandstenen lateien. Pui en lijst entree in rood graniet. Veel decoratieve elementen, zoals rozetten, in kalkzandsteen. De gevel aan de Hogewoerd beslaat twee vensterassen onder een steekkap. De gevel aan de Watersteeg telt drie vensterassen, waarvan de rechter twee onder een steekkap. Tussen de twee gevels een overhoekse entree met daarboven een arkel.
Boven een zwart granieten plint: etalages met kozijnen van gesneden houten platte kolommetjes en glas-in-lood bovenlichten in roeden met vloeiende Art Nouveau lijnen. Etalagevensters tussen granieten kolommen met op de hoogte van de bovenlichten driedubbele en dubbele zuiltjes, bronzen rozetten en basreliëfs met eenvoudige bloemmotieven. Een ijzeren balk, onder een granieten lijst, overspant de etalages. In de gevel aan de Hogewoerd (zuid) drie etalagevensters, in de gevel aan de Watersteeg (oost) twee. Daartussen een overhoekse entree met dubbele houten glasdeur met koperbeslag, onder een bovenlicht. Rechts van de etalagevensters aan de Watersteeg twee iets verzonken ingangen met vensters en zijlichten onder even brede vensters. Zowel vensters als deuren met hardstenen lijsten aan bovenzijde.
Op de verdiepingen kalkzandstenen lagen ter hoogte van de wisseldorpels en waterdorpels. Rond bovenlichten kleine kalkzandstenen zuiltjes en cordonlijstjes, met geschubde lijst aan bovenkant. Boven de driedelige vensters in de geveltoppen basreliëfs in hardsteen.
De arkel telt drie bouwlagen op een tienzijdige grondslag, onder een zinken spits met roeven en een kleine bol. De arkel heeft een bolle onderkant. De schuifvensters van de arkel zijn aan elkaar gekoppeld door kalkzandstenen hoekige zuiltjes. Glas-in-lood in de bovenlichten, kalkzandstenen wisseldorpels.
De derde bouwlaag van de arkel is een loggia. Het dak steunt op dubbele kalkzandstenen zuiltjes. In lijst onder dak abstract basreliëf.
Waardering
De winkel met bovenwoning is van algemeen belang vanwege de cultuur- en architectuurhistorische waarde als representatief voorbeeld van een hoekwinkelpand met bovenwoning uit het begin van de twintigste eeuw. Bovendien is het pand van belang vanwege de aan de Art Nouveau verwante bouwstijl en het bijzondere materiaalgebruik en de uitzonderlijke detaillering.
In stedebouwkundig opzicht is het woon-winkelpand van belang als onderdeel van het beschermd stadsgezicht en vanwege de beeldbepalende ligging op de hoek van de Hogewoerd en Watersteeg.

Many decorative elements, such as rosettes, in lime-sandstone. The facade on the Hogewoerd spans two window bays beneath a roof gable. The facade on the Watersteeg has three window bays, of which the right two are beneath a roof gable. Between the two facades a corner entrance with an arch above it.
Above a black granite plinth: display windows with frames of carved wooden flat columns and leaded glass fanlights in bars with flowing Art Nouveau lines. Display windows between granite columns with, at the height of the fanlights, triple and double small columns, bronze rosettes and bas-reliefs with simple floral motifs. An iron beam, beneath a granite list, spans the display windows. In the facade on the Hogewoerd (south) three display windows, in the facade on the Watersteeg (east) two.
