Inleiding

Description
Introduction
The city concert hall (the Leiden CONCERTGEBOUW) was built in the period 1890 to 1891 according to a design by the then municipal architect ir. Daniël Elisa Cornelis Knuttel (1857-1926), who would be appointed as State Architect a year later. The design in an exuberant Neo-Renaissance building style, mingled with elements from Mannerism and Baroque, is representative of this period in Knuttel's oeuvre. He designed predominantly in the Neo-Renaissance building style until around 1910. Within Knuttel's oeuvre, the city concert hall is a particularly richly decorated example. The building replaced the previous city concert hall which had burned down on the same location in 1889. At that time, Knuttel had already prepared designs for a renovation of the old city concert hall, which was too small. The municipality had already purchased an adjoining property for this expansion. After the fire, the municipality chose complete new construction instead of repairing and extending the remains. For inspiration, Knuttel, together with the director of the gas factory D. van der Horst, made a visit to the Gewandhaus in Leipzig, the Opera in Frankfurt, the Mellini-theater in Hannover and the Philharmonie in Berlin. With additional parcels added, the new city concert hall encompassed: the old city concert hall, an adjoining parcel on the Breestraat, the parcel of the former telegraph office at the rear and the weights and measures office located behind the Waalse Church (both on the Aalmarkt). The caretaker's dwelling next to the Waalse Church was renovated at the same time by the contractors of the city concert hall, S. van Leeuwen and Iz. van de Kamp.
The city concert hall forms part of the protected townscape. The front facade is a character-defining component of the northeastern gable wall of the Breestraat. The rear facade, Aalmarkt 7, is designed in the style of Neo-Dutch Renaissance and stands in the gable wall on the south side of the Rhine. The sculpture was created by the atelier Bourgonjon from The Hague.
The doors under round arches on the ground floor have been modernised after several renovations. The glass is missing from the lanterns of the loggia. Of the interior, the Grand Hall, Foyer and mouldings in the corridors have been authentically preserved. The interior has otherwise been modernised.
Description
City concert hall of two storeys (including the bel étage) with a narrower section of three and a half storeys on the Aalmarkt. The section on the Breestraat is covered by a truncated hipped roof with grey tuile du Nord tiles.
Upper roof surfaces with zinc and gutters. The symmetrical front facade (southwest) on the Breestraat is raised above a hardstone plinth in red brick with speckled courses and richly decorated with sandstone sculpture. The ornaments include, among others, scrollwork, casement rosettes, diamond points, masks, shells, spheres and guttae. The facade has nine window bays, of which the central three project forward under a zinc gabled roof with gutters. This risalit is raised one storey higher and serves to break up the possible monotony of the facade. On the first floor a large balcony on columns with Doric capitals, which form a columned gallery for the ground floor. The gallery consists of eight free-standing columns and four three-quarter columns against pillars of the risalit. Scrollwork on the columns. Balcony with tile flooring and sandstone balustrade, on which bulbous vases with scrollwork.
On the floor above, paired French doors with fanlights in a frame of sandstone blocks. Cornicelets on consoles above the fanlights.
Between volutes and vases, round niches in square panels, beneath pediments with abstract shell motifs. The bel étage is closed off by an overhanging wooden drip moulding on sculpted consoles with heads, a frieze and a dentil band. The risalit is bounded on both sides by square columns on which fluted pilasters with Ionic capitals, depicting musical attributes. On the first floor a loggia behind a tripartite arcade. The two columns and two half-columns end in composite capitals.
Between the arches ornamented cast-iron tie-rods with lanterns.
Sculpted instruments in the spandrels of the arches. The extra storey of the risalit is narrower. The side facades are covered with slate in rend-covering. In the front facade a two-light window with fanlights under small round arches between two round-arch niches, flanked by half-columns. Above it a cornice on consoles and a pediment with the city coat of arms. On the pediment a zinc lyre and two griffins. On either side volutes with shell motifs and zinc vases.
The narrow rear facade on the Aalmarkt (northeast) is raised over three and a half storeys, under a mansard roof with anthracite-grey Dutch tiles. A spout gable above the middle of the three window bays breaks through the wooden drip moulding. The brickwork of red brick is enlivened by sandstone drip mouldings and partly rusticated sandstone corner, closing and ornamental stones in the arches above the facade openings. The entrance is located on the left in the facade. To the right of it a recessed ground floor and an entresol. The entrance consists of a paired panel door, beneath a pediment that is interrupted by a fanlight. On the ground floor a closed three-part window and a service entrance with paired doors, both beneath sandstone lintel beams. On the entresol two round-arch windows with fanlights, above sandstone panels with volutes. Closed T-windows beneath basket-handle arches on the first floor. Ornamental brickwork in the arch barrels.
On the second floor six narrow round-arch windows with fanlights. A basket-handle arch on pilasters encompasses the two central windows and forms the base of the spout gable. The pilasters rest on consoles. In the gable top a round-arch window with central mullion and fanlight. On either side of the gable top, beneath the drip moulding a frieze of ornamental brickwork.
Interior Of the interior, in particular the corridors, grand hall and the foyer on the first floor have been preserved. In the corridors, the panel doors with original door cases determine the appearance.
In the grand hall, among others wall wainscoting with wooden panels and plastered Ionic pilasters; plastered Doric columns, which support the balcony; the balcony with panels in the balustrade and on the underside.
The columns and pilasters stand on pedestals. In particular, the capitals of the pilasters are provided with exuberant decorations with gold paint.
The walls of the foyer are articulated by a wainscoting, pilasters with capitals in the Ionic order, a cornice on single and paired brackets and doors in richly decorated door cases. The wainscoting and doors are provided with panels. On either side of the doors pilasters with pedestals, ornaments in the Neo-Louis XVI style and composite capitals.
Above the doors shell decorations and vases. Details in gold paint also appear in the foyer.
Valuation
The city concert hall is of general importance due to its cultural and architectural-historical value because of the richly decorated Neo-Renaissance building style with elements from Mannerism and Baroque. Moreover, the design is important within Knuttel's oeuvre, in which the city concert hall is representative of the period, but due to the rich decoration occupies a special place.
From an urban design perspective, the city concert hall is important due to its character-defining location in the gable wall on the Breestraat and on the Aalmarkt.
The exterior is relatively well-preserved.
The grand hall, corridors and former foyer are still in such an original state that the interior greatly enhances the architectural-historical value of the building.
