Inleiding
Het voormalige 'Hôpital Wallon' is in 1892 gebouwd als ZIEKENHUIS in opdracht van de Waalse Gemeente. Het betrof de uitbreiding van het sinds 1886 in het pand Rapenburg 12-14 gevestigde ziekenhuis. Ontwerper van de uitbreiding was de Leidse architect W.C. Mulder. Het gebouw behield de oorspronkelijke functie tot 1925, daarna heeft het nog dienst gedaan als zusterhuis van het Academisch Ziekenhuis en als nood-stadhuis. Vanaf 1946 is het in gebruik als studentenhuis. Het gebouw heeft de stijlkenmerken van de destijds in zwang zijnde Neo-Hollandse Renaissance en maakt deel uit van een gesloten gevelwand binnen het beschermde stadsgezicht.
Omschrijving
Vanuit een samengestelde plattegrond met drie bouwlagen, in baksteen opgetrokken pand met accenten van natuursteen en gepleisterde baksteen, onder een met bouletpannen gedekt schilddak. Symmetrische, vijfassige voorgevel met gefrijnde, tot de onderdorpels van de begane-grondvensters opgaande hardstenen plint. Licht risalerende, hoger opgaande middentravee met een entreepartij binnen een omlijsting van op hardstenen sokkels staande, gecanneleerde pilasters. Deze worden bekroond door als kraagstenen functionerende leeuwekoppen. Paneeldeur met raamijzers onder een in een uitkragend bovenste deel van de omlijsting gevat, boven een geprofileerd kalf staand bovenlicht met console tussen twee gekoppelde geprofileerde rondbogen (bifora) met sluitsteen en schelpmotieven in de diepliggende boogtrommels. Aesculaap in het spaarveld aan weerszijden van het bovenlicht. Boven de rondbogen het jaartal 1892 tussen vier kleine consoles die de bekroning van de entreepartij dragen. Deze is samengesteld uit een geprofileerde kroonlijst, klauwstukken met bol en gekeerde voluten, een centraal veld met inscriptie "HôPITAL WALLON" en eendriehoekige fronton met schouders, diepliggend tympaan en siervaasbekroning. Aan weerszijden van de entreepartij twee diepliggende zesruitsvensters met hardstenen onderdorpel, schuivende bovenramen, brede houten middenstijlen en geprofileerde wisseldorpels en regels. Boven de geprofileerde bovendorpel twee gekoppelde rondbogen met sluit- en aanzetstenen. Tweede bouwlaag boven een geprofileerde hardstenen cordonlijst. De vijf vensters als die op de begane grond, maar onder segmentbogen met sluit- en aanzetstenen en vlechtwerk in de boogtrommels. Sluitstenen verbonden met de geprofileerde cordonlijst tussen de tweede en de derde bouwlaag. Vensters als de overige, maar met een over de gehele breedte van de gevel doorgetrokken geprofileerde onderdorpel. Boven de vensters hanekammen van gepleisterde en ongepleisterde baksteen. Rechte gevelbeëindigingen aan weerszijden van het middenrisaliet voorzien van een uitgemetseld boogfries met sluitstenen en rechte consoles en een geprofileerde daklijst op eveneens geprofileerde gootklossen. Vanuit het middenrisaliet doorgetrokken, op kraagstukken met diamantkoppen rustende dakkapel met tuitgevel en met pannen gedekte steekkap. Binnen de uitgemetselde top-omlijsting een rechtgesloten venster met geprofileerde onder- en bovendorpel onder een rondboog met kwartronde neggen. Top voorzien van kraagstukken, schouders met obelisken, geprofileerde deklijst en tuit met bekroning in de vorm van een fronton met obelisk. Staafankers aan het zichtbare deel van de linker zijgevel. Voor het gebouw een hardstenen stoep met ijzeren hekken tussen zware, eveneens hardstenen stoeppalen met bolbekroning.
Waardering
Het voormalige Hôpital Wallon uit 1892 is van algemeen belang wegens cultuur- en architectuurhistorische waarde als kenmerkende uitwendig gaaf bewaard voorbeeld van een kleinschalig ziekenhuisgebouw in Neo-Hollandse Renaissancestijl. Het voormalige ziekenhuis heeft tevens ensemblewaarde als beeldbepalend onderdeel van een historische gevelwand.

The former 'Hôpital Wallon' was built in 1892 as a HOSPITAL on commission of the Walloon Congregation. This concerned the extension of the hospital established since 1886 in the premises at Rapenburg 12-14. The designer of the extension was the Leiden architect W.C. Mulder. The building retained its original function until 1925, after which it served as a convent annex of the Academic Hospital and as an emergency town hall. From 1946 onwards it has been in use as a student house. The building displays the stylistic characteristics of the Neo-Dutch Renaissance then in vogue and forms part of a unified facade within the protected townscape.
Description
From a composite ground plan with three storeys, a building constructed in brick with accents of natural stone and rendered brick, under a hipped roof covered with barrel tiles. Symmetrical, five-bay front facade with finely drafted, hard stone plinth rising to the sills of the ground-floor windows. Slightly projecting, taller central bay with an entrance set within a surround of fluted pilasters standing on hard stone plinths. These are crowned by lion's heads functioning as corbels. Panel door with window irons under a fanlight set within and projecting upper part of the surround, above a profiled calf standing above a moulded fanlight with console between two coupled moulded round arches (bifora) with keystones and shell motifs in the recessed arch drums. Aesculapius in the spandrel on either side of the fanlight. Above the round arches the date 1892 between four small consoles which carry the crown of the entrance. This is composed of a moulded cornice, claw brackets with sphere and reversed volutes, a central field with inscription "HôPITAL WALLON" and a triangular pediment with shoulders, recessed tympanum and ornamental urn crown. On either side of the entrance two recessed six-paned windows with hard stone sill, sliding upper sashes, broad wooden mullions and moulded transoms and sills. Above the moulded upper transom two coupled round arches with keystones and impost stones. Second storey above a moulded hard stone string course. The five windows as those on the ground floor, but under segment arches with keystones and impost stones and lattice-work in the arch drums. Keystones connected to the moulded string course between the second and third storey. Windows as the others, but with a moulded sill drawn across the entire width of the facade. Valuation
The former Hôpital Wallon of 1892 is of general importance for its cultural and architectural-historical value as a characteristic, externally well-preserved example of a small-scale hospital building in Neo-Dutch Renaissance style. The former hospital also has ensemble value as a visually defining component of a historic facade range.
