Inleiding

Introduction

With front facades facing the Oude Rijn, double DWELLING HOUSE, built in 1882 to an eclectic design by architect W.C. Mulder. The properties are part of a closed facade wall and form part of the protected townscape.

Description

The double dwelling house is constructed in brick from a rectangular ground plan. The two spout gables are mirror images of each other and together form a symmetrical whole. The two storeys and an attic storey under zinc-clad pointed roofs (gabled roofs) stand perpendicular to a transverse, taller-rising gabled roof covered with black (left) and red Dutch tiles (right) with tapering brick chimney and valley gutters. The front facades each have three window axes below and two on the upper storey. Ground floor and first storey with arched facade openings. Ground floor with two times two windows with twelve-pane sash windows with wooden sub-sills and each a door in the outer axis under moulded skewbacks and three-pane fanlights. First storey with two times two windows with sixteen-pane sash windows and likewise wooden sub-sills. In both gable heads a circular window with radial glazing bars, three cast-iron ornamental wall anchors and professionally pointed, climbing round-arch frieze with arch edge of yellow brick. Facade termination in the form of rope courses with moulded wooden coping strips, like the spouts clad in zinc. The rear facade, altered in the nineteen thirties, has on the ground floor an "open" shop front with folding doors.

The interior contains the living room (originally an en suite room) still provided with a marble fireplace. Also in one of the rooms on the first storey is a fireplace present. The roof truss structure is composed of polonceau trusses.

Valuation

The double dwelling house dating from 1882 is of general importance because of its cultural-historical and architectural-historical value as a characteristic example of restrained eclectic dwelling-house architecture in a historic canal facade.
