Omschrijving
Inleiding

Description
Introduction
In 1876 the ward for infectious diseases, which was initially housed in the west wing, was placed outside the building in three stone pavilions in the garden. Of the three pavilions in the garden one PATIENT PAVILION remains. This patient pavilion was raised by one storey during a later renovation.
Description
The patient pavilion is constructed on a rectangular ground plan over two storeys under an overhanging gabled roof with slates in Rhine bond, wooden gutters and wind braces.
The ground floor is constructed in red brick, the first floor all around provided with wooden wall boarding. On the ground floor twelve-pane sash windows under arched eight-pane fanlights, both divided into two by a centre mullion. Hardstone water-outlets under the windows, extending above.
On the first floor casement six-pane windows under corbelled arch-shaped three-pane fanlights. In both end facades double panelled doors with glass and decorative ironwork under arched eight-pane fanlights. In the northern end facade (which has four window bays) the entrance is situated in the second bay from the left. In the symmetrical southern end facade (three window bays wide) the entrance is placed centrally.
The roof light of the original single-storey building was reinstalled on the raised building after the renovation.
Valuation
The patient pavilion is of general interest because of its cultural and architectural-historical value due to the Eclectic architectural style with elements from the Chalet style.
From an urban planning perspective the pavilion is of general interest because of the spatial and functional relationship with the other components of the hospital complex. Moreover, the pavilion is a landmark situated on one of the former bastions of the fortress Leiden and lies next to the Morspoort.
The exterior of the pavilion is relatively intact.
