Inleiding

Introduction

Former BARN (2) belonging to the complex of a thatcher's dwelling with business building. The barn was, after a fire in 1867, rebuilt in a Craft-traditional building style by master thatcher and reed-mat thatcher P. Crispijn and used as such until the 1960s of the 20th century. The front section was intended as a carpenter's shop and workshop for reed-matting and the middle section as a clog-maker's workshop. The rear part, originally an open section on two sides (reed shelf), bordering the Vinkesloot, served for drying the reed. The barn was restored in 1977 and 1988. Apart from closing off and shortening the rear section, the barn has retained its original character and main form.

The barn is situated on an inner courtyard opposite the dwelling house already protected by national decree (national monument no. 38022) and borders on the north side the premises of Voorstraat 39 (national monument no. 38021) and on the south side it is separated by a narrow path from the premises of the dwellings on the Bloklaan. On the east side the premises border the Vinkesloot.

Description

A barn approximately 30 m long on rectangular floor plan under gabled roof with on the northern roof slope red cross tiles and on the southern smothered Oegstgeester roof tiles. The ridge direction, like that of the dwelling house, is perpendicular to the Voorstraat.

The front facade is partly constructed of red brick in cross bond, partly half-brick. The remaining walls consist, above a mortared plinth, of wooden tarred pot-covered sections. The board edges are painted white. The front facade is a pointed gable with on the right a clamped door and on the left a large composite window with four twelve-light sash windows. On the loft in the middle a wooden hoisting shutter with six-light fanlight. In the rear facade a double-opening clamped door has been installed with a modern garage door behind it.

Internally the collar-tie roof truss with timber bracing on mortared posts is largely still intact.

Valuation

The thatcher's barn is of general cultural-historical importance as a representative example of a thatcher's barn in Craft-traditional building style from the mid-nineteenth century.

The barn is of general architectural-historical importance because of the special typology as a business building for a thatcher with associated design and material use.

The barn is of general importance because of its ensemble value with the dwelling house and the visually distinctive location within the protected village townscape in the old village centre of Voorschoten.
