Inleiding

Dornseiffen (overleden 1922).

Introduction

The Mennonite CHURCH (no. 35) dating from 1864-'65, with CARETAKER'S DWELLING (no. 37), as a corner house, was designed by the Sneek architect A. Breunissen Troost in an Eclectic architectural style, influenced by English Neo-Gothic. The construction was carried out by K.S. de Groot and carpenter H.N. van der Schaaf; supervisor during execution was J.H. Makkink. The former rectory dwelling, to which the church is built with a connecting wall, falls outside national monument protection due to minor architectural-historical significance. The wooden garage and attached wooden sheds at the caretaker's dwelling likewise fall outside national monument protection due to minor architectural value.

The first stone was laid on 12 September 1864 and a year later the church was formally opened for use. The number of seats in the church (over 200) was calculated for a growing number of congregation members, a vision that was not shared by everyone. According to local tradition, this is also the reason why the "absence of Reverend Pieter Overbeek" is mentioned on the memorial stone in the hall of the church. The church building had no organ until 1907. The cabinet pipe organ placed at that time by organ maker Maarschalkerweerd & Zoon of Utrecht was replaced in 1937 by the present instrument, which is not protected as a national monument. The church grounds are surrounded by a monumental FENCE, supplied by the firm Sterckman in 1865. A dogwood hedge, supplied by the firm Krijns and Co. of Joure, was perhaps intended for the boundary division at the caretaker's dwelling. Outside the fence, on the lawn in front of the church in the corner between the church and the rectory, stands a MONUMENT from 1922 in honour of the Mennonite preacher H.G. Dornseiffen (died 1922).

The CARETAKER'S DWELLING was remodelled internally in the nineteen-fifties. With the exception of the cellar and the passageway to the church, the interior is of subsidiary importance for national monument protection. The cellar has been used since 1877 as storage space for the skippers.

Description

The church with caretaker's dwelling has a rectangular ground plan with a reduction on the western side for the caretaker's dwelling, which has an almost square ground plan. The church is built of brick: the southern facade is plastered with Portland cement and provided with ashlar facing joints; the northern facade has a plastered parapet with a brick drip moulding; the rising masonry is fair-faced brickwork, flush jointed with a pencil line. The side facades are divided vertically by pilaster strips with profiled ashlar crowns beneath the cast-iron gutter. The articulation corresponds with the church layout: four full window bays and half a bay on the east and west sides. All window openings have cast-iron windows with a Tudor arch; the vertical muntins are decorated with finials, sometimes imitated by paintwork in the horizontal front facade, and at the top with fish-tail motifs. The hipped-gabled roof is covered with black glazed flat Frisian tiles.

The eastern facade is a variant on the pointed gable, resting on a plastered plinth and articulated by four colossal pilaster strips, with deep plastered mirror surfaces, which as pilasters break through the gutter line. The pilasters are crowned with a profiled coping stone. The central risalite is crowned with an acanthus leaf finial with a rose anchor. In the gable top a cast-iron rose window with an ashlar rustic surround. Recessed in the central risalite the entrance with fanlight and church window, entirely framed by almost full-round, colossal pilasters with composite capital on which bundled pilasters as closure and hollow mouldings. In the fanlight of the porte brisée Neo-Gothic carving with leaf motifs. In the side surfaces of the front facade multi-paned Tudor arch windows supported by artificial stone facade decorations. The sills of the three windows in the eastern facade are of cast iron. Between the church and the rectory stands a brick wall with blind Tudor arches between pilaster strips, which are crowned by ashlar, profiled coping stones.

The INTERIOR of the church has a vestibule and a church hall with organ gallery. In the vestibule above the passage to the church hall is a memorial stone with in Neo-Gothic letters the inscription: "On this church building, in the absence of Reverend Pieter Overbeek, on the 12th of September 1864 the first stone was laid by Simon Gerrits Boetje, eldest member of the church council". In the church hall, notably important is the furniture, such as the church benches and pulpit.

The church interior has a beaded wood wainscot and is entirely plastered; the western facade has rounded corners, the eastern facade is closed straight. The walls are articulated by pilaster strips with a cornice. The ceiling has a hollow panel moulding and a barrel vault; at the corner points a hanging finial; on the eastern wall this decoration is imitated in plasterwork. The tie rods are connected to the vault ridge.

On the western side of the church hall is the pulpit on an octagonal column with a carved staircase rail; hanging from the bowl are Tudor arch ornaments; the bowl sides are decorated with carved scrolls. The braced sound board is decorated with turned finials; the attachment of the brace rod is covered by a plastered drapery. On either side of the pulpit are porte brisées to the sacristy. Above the doors ornamental plasterwork with palmettes and cornucopiae in the overdoors. The elevated liturgical centre has a curved communion rail with cast-iron balusters, which consists of separate parts and is movable. On the dais on both sides of the church hall two closed church council benches with a canopy; on the north side the so-called deaf bench, for the hard of hearing. The side panels of the lecterns and the back panels are crowned with simplified palmettes. The panel doors of all benches in the church have original wooden handles and at the top a decoration strongly reminiscent of a rudder decoration. In the detailing of the benches the motif of the Tudor arch recurs repeatedly. The corner house, the CARETAKER'S DWELLING, consists of a basement, a noble storey, a first storey and an attic storey. The southern and western facades are rendered with Portland cement with ashlar facing joints; the northern facade is executed in fair-faced brickwork in stretcher bond.

On the north side a stone stairway and door with fanlight under an one-and-a-half-brick course; above it a two-paned sash window with Tudor arch under a stone course. The western facade is three window bays wide with in the basement cast-iron, multi-paned cellar windows; in the storeys H-windows. In the southern facade, according to an inscription on the keystone, a passage to the cellar beneath the dwelling was made by H.M. in 1877. A cast-iron FENCE on a brick wall closes off the church forecourt. The fencing swings forward at the level of the church entrance and has a double passage there; to the side of the church is a passage to the caretaker's dwelling. The fence stanchions, fluted pillars with acanthus-like motifs on the base and capital, crowned by a finial with a pine cone, are set into ashlar blocks. The spears are decorated with cast-iron points, reinforcement crosses and hanging ornaments.

The ashlar MONUMENT was erected in 1882, commissioned by "THE GRATEFUL / FRISIAN SKIPPERS", in memory of Rev. Dornseiffen, founder and director of the school fund for skippers' children. The monument consists of an articulated pedestal: a plinth with fine tooling, a pedestal block with an inscription, and a shaft with coping stone; above it a black-painted obelisk with on the front a relief featuring an anchor. On the shaft of the pedestal block on the side facing the street an inscription "IN MEMORY OF REV. H.G. DORNSEIFFEN ..." and on the sides a relief with palm branches.
