Omschrijving

- wegens de aanleg in landschapsstijl rond 1906 met clumbs of trees en zichtassen gericht op de buitenplaats De Berencamp;

- wegens de visueel-ruimtelijke samenhang met de buitenplaats De Berencamp, waarbij het huis De Berencamp, het tolhuisje en de duiventoren als 'points de vue' dienen;

- wegens het 19de-eeuwse wandelbos met lanenstelsel en grillig gevormd kavelpatroon;

Component 2

Description

The HISTORIC GARDEN AND PARK LAYOUT came into being from the mid 19th century onwards. Before that, Salentein had no significant layout, though a small excavated pond area directly south of the house is already visible on De Man's map (1802-1803). The focus of the layout is concentrated on the terrain to the west of Salentein on the far side of the provincial road (Puttersttraatweg) and directed towards De Berencamp. Here, around 1906, the composition was improved and a spatial-visual relationship between the two country estates Salentein and De Berencamp was created. Through the planting of various tree groups (clumbs of trees), sight lines were laid out, whereby the house De Berencamp, the toll house and the dove tower serve as 'points de vue'. The immediate surroundings of the house are arranged with the pond and some monumental specimens (oak, plane tree, linden and weeping willow). From the Putterstraatweg, the house has a highly distinctive visual function, which is caused by the elongated, sunken meadow in front of the house, which is closed off on the east side by a straight avenue (Topographical Military Map 1849-1859). From the house there is also a fine view over this meadow towards the vegetated edge on the south side in which some tree groups were originally spared (now overgrown). To the west of the house lay formerly the vegetable garden adjacent to the orchard. The area to the east and south of the house was forested in the third quarter of the 19th century, creating the coulisse landscape. In doing so, the rectangular plot division was abandoned (depicted on the cadastral minute of 1827) and replaced by a more irregular plot pattern (Topographical Map 1871) with a winding walk around two meadows; the alternation of open and closed spaces characterizes the layout of this woodland. The meadows are largely hedged. The arrangement of the meadows is somewhat disrupted by the new villa with its attached garden in the westerly and a duck decoy in the easterly meadow. Several straight avenues run through the forest; the west-east avenue (direction the railway) ends at a small hill and a roundel; the straight access lane to the farmhouse 'de Hoge Dam' is flanked by two protrusions arranged as a roundel with tree planting and a ditch. From this last-mentioned lane are views over the open meadows on either side, which are enclosed on the north and south sides by irregular forest plots (hedge on south side planted in 1830). Around 1950, the forest was largely felled and replanted, whereby the structure was maintained. In the park forest Heribert van Westerveld is buried (? - 1831) on a round island with old oaks and beeches around it (see description of component 7).

Valuation

HISTORIC GARDEN AND PARK LAYOUT belonging to the country estate De Salentein of general interest:

- on account of the layout in landscape style around 1906 with clumbs of trees and sight lines directed towards the country estate De Berencamp;

- on account of the visual-spatial coherence with the country estate De Berencamp, whereby the house De Berencamp, the toll house and the dove tower serve as 'points de vue';

- on account of the 19th-century pleasure forest with avenue system and irregularly shaped plot pattern;

- on account of the functional-spatial coherence with other components of the country estate.
