Inleiding

Introduction

Netherlands Reformed CHURCH, erected in 1877-1878 to the design of architect F.J. Nieuwenhuis from Utrecht in eclectic style. The church is located on the north-east side of the village of Wilnis, parallel to the Ir. Enschedeweg.

Description

A hall church situated on Koningin Julianastraat on a rectangular plan under a gabled roof with suppressed Dutch pantiles. A tower is placed against the south side, and a consistory is built against the north side.

The tower placed against the front facade or south facade has a square plan with four storeys. The lowest contains the entrance, consisting of a double door. The second storey has a round-arched window with iron glazing bars on the front and on the left and right side facade a blind round-arched niche. The third storey has on all sides three sounding holes in round-arched openings. Above the third storey the tower tapers. The fourth storey has bevelled corners and contains sounding holes and a bell. Around it is a brick balustrade set with pinnacles on the corners, which are provided with zinc cladding. The pinnacles transition into flying buttresses that land on the bevelled corners of the tower storey. The storey is finished with a profiled cornice with alternating large and small triangular pediments. The octagonal spire is provided with small roof cappings and a cross with a weathervane. The bronze bell dates from 1541.

The church has five bays which are separated from each other by tapering buttresses with round-arched bracing fields at the top. Below the iron round-arched windows runs a drip moulding all around the building. In the front facade there are round-arched windows on either side of the tower with above them three ascending, small round-arched niches.

The rear facade contains large and small round-arched niches and at the top a circular window. All the facades are finished with cornices with ornamental brickwork.

The consistory has one storey and is closed off on three sides and is provided all around with six cottage windows with semi-circular fanlight and a profiled calf. At this height the masonry is provided with a drip moulding. On the south-west side, near the rear facade of the church, the consistory contains a door with round-arched fanlight.

The interior of the church consists of a large space, vaulted over by a barrel vault with transverse arches at the height of the fields between the windows. The fields between the windows and the bracing fields on the north side are articulated with bays, triglyphs and a cornice. Organ case with front pipes from circa 1760 made by J.J. Moreau originating from St. Lambertus in Kralingen, in 1926 provided with new interior works by J. de Koff. The interior works by De Koff have no monumental value. The arrangement of the pulpit and pews has been changed and, together with the balcony on the north side, falls outside the protection. Commemorative stones are set into the mortar in the portal and the consistory chamber.

Valuation

The Netherlands Reformed Church is of general interest because of its architectural-historical value as a recognizable example of a hall church in eclectic style and because of its ensemble and situational value within the centre of Wilnis.
