Het AARDWERK van het fort bij Abcoude dateert uit 1883-1885 en ligt met de brede zijde naar het zuidoosten. Het is omgeven door een gracht en een buitenfort met grenssloten. Het terrein is afgebakend met tien genummerde grensstenen die nog maar weinig voorkomen. De ontsluitingsweg ligt aan de noordwestzijde, waaraan een houten loods en de wachterswoning gelegen zijn. Het aardwerk is toegankelijk middels een niet oorspronkelijke toegangsbrug. Het aardwerk heeft aan de oost- en westzijde een oreillon. Ook aan de brede zuidoostzijde zijn twee golvingen in de wal aangebracht, die de functie van bastion hadden. Bij de oreillons zijn remises en bergplaatsen deels ingebouwd. De noordzijde heeft een breed, vooruitstekend aardwerk waar een remise is aangebracht. In het midden van het fort is een frontwal opgeworpen, waarin zich een schuilplaats bevindt. De wallen van de oorspronkelijke artillerie opstellingen zijn tijdens WO I vergraven en er zijn loopgraven in aangebracht ten behoeve van een verdediging door de infanterie.
Waardering
Het aardwerk is van algemeen belang vanwege de cultuurhistorische waarde als voorbeeld van een gebastionneerd aardwerk, als uniek prototype aangelegd binnen de Stelling van Amsterdam. Tevens van waarde als onderdeel in de ontwikkeling van de krijgskunde in Nederland alsmede van ensemblewaarde in relatie met de overige complexonderdelen. De tien, het terrein afbakenende, grensstenen zijn relatief zeldzaam.

Description
The EARTHWORK of the fort at Abcoude dates from 1883-1885 and lies with its broad side facing the southeast. It is surrounded by a moat and an outer fort with boundary ditches. The terrain is bounded by ten numbered boundary stones which are now rarely found. The access road is located on the northwest side, where a wooden shed and the keeper's lodge are situated. The earthwork is accessible by means of a non-original access bridge. The earthwork has an oreillon on the east and west sides. Also on the broad southeast side, two undulations in the rampart have been made, which served the function of bastions. Next to the oreillons, remises and storage areas are partly built in. The north side has a broad, protruding earthwork where a remise has been placed. In the middle of the fort a front rampart has been thrown up, in which a shelter is located. The ramparts of the original artillery positions were deepened during WWI and trenches were made for defense by infantry.
Valuation
The earthwork is of general importance due to its cultural-historical value as an example of a bastioned earthwork, as a unique prototype constructed within the Stelling van Amsterdam. Also of value as part of the development of military science in the Netherlands as well as of ensemble value in relation to the other complex components.
