Inleiding

Introduction

Detached HUNTING KEEPER'S DWELLING with former BAKERY HOUSE and WATER WELL, located on the south side of the Heegderweg in Uddel, in the western part of and belonging to the Crown Domain. The building is presumably constructed in the last quarter of the previous century as a farmhouse. In this case as a so-called church farmhouse, a farmhouse whose yields accrued to the church, which owned it. Around 1903 the residential part of the farmhouse was demolished to make way for an accommodation where Queen Wilhelmina could, among other things, take her tea. Until the 1970s (20th century) the building was internally still divided: the front part was intended for the royal household, the rear part - the former part of the farmhouse - was the hunting keeper's dwelling. Nowadays the entire building is used as such.

Description

The building, laid in running bond brickwork, is constructed on a T-shaped foundation with a single-storey rear wing and a transversely placed two-storey front wing. The rear wing has a half-hipped gabled roof, the front wing a hipped roof; both covered with closely laid re-improved Dutch tiles. The building is oriented with its rear facade towards the road. The second storey of the front wing is plastered and contains partly carved blind framework. The wooden guttering along this section rests on carved corbels. The wall openings are relieved by a brick course of one and a half bricks.

The symmetrically arranged FRONT FACADE contains in the middle a three-light with richly carved mullions. On the left the former main entrance to the front wing with a panelled door with two glass panels behind a wrought iron door grille and a 2-pane fanlight. On the right a 6-pane sash window. The upper storey has in the middle two coupled casement windows and on the left and right a single 4-pane casement window with 2-pane fanlight. The central part of the facade terminates in a stepped gable with catslide roof. The apex is furnished with a timber lining. The far-projecting roof rests here partly on a carved blind spandrel and partly on carved corbels. The profiled wind brace terminates in a gable ornament supported by three sawn ducks and furnished with a weather vane with a stag. The stepped gable has two windows with a 3-pane glazing bar division at the top.

The LEFT SIDE FACADE contains on the ground floor on the left a 6-pane sash window and on the right a small single-pane window behind a lattice. The upper storey has on the left a 4-pane casement window with 2-pane fanlight. The left side facade of the rear wing contains on the right a 6-pane sash window with shutters and on the left a small low-set single-pane window.

The REAR FACADE contains in the middle a window at the location of the former split doors. The arched opening has ashlar corner and lintel stones and small block stones. The opening is flanked on both sides by a small semi-circular enclosed cast iron window. At the far right is an arched passage door. Above the split door is a stag's antlers affixed with below it a small blind shield, painted in a red colour. Such decoration occurs on all hunting keeper's dwellings and from the number of side branches of the antlers the position of the occupant can be determined.

The LEFT SIDE FACADE of the front wing contains on the ground floor a 6-pane sash window. The rear wing has on the left the current main entrance (formerly the entrance to the dwelling in the former part), consisting of a non-original door with a side light on the left consisting of a 6-pane sash window. On the right a 4-pane casement window. Above the entrance a structure with altered window.

The INTERIOR contains on the ground floor a stucco ceiling with circular central ornament. The room on the upper storey - the space where tea was taken by Wilhelmina - has a stucco ceiling with rich central and corner ornaments containing ribbons and oak leaves and acorns. In this room there is also a fireplace with a mantelpiece of green glazed tiles in a copper frame and with a black marble top slab. The fireplace has an insert hearth of 'Hestia'.

On the left next to the building is a former bakery house on a rectangular foundation under a gabled roof covered with closely laid Dutch tiles. On the left it has a small extension under a catslide roof. The front facade, facing away from the road, contains a door, the left side facade an arched 9-pane cast iron window. In front of the bakery house is the original water well.

Assessment

Hunting keeper's dwelling with former bakery house and water well.

- Of architectural historical value as a well and - particularly as regards the exterior - well-preserved example of a hunting keeper's dwelling. The building stands out by high-quality aesthetic qualities, such as the use of materials and the rich ornamentation. Characteristic are, among others, the framework and the carved components, but also the rich stucco ceiling in the former royal 'suite'.

- Of landscape value due to its situation in the Crown Domain, with still remnants of the former functions, such as the orientation with the rear side towards the road (farmhouse function) and the large garden with views of the forests on the front side (royal lodge function).

- Of cultural historical value due to the designation and the resulting appearance. The building was originally constructed as a church farmhouse, subsequently it was given the function of royal lodge and hunting keeper's dwelling. Also of importance as a periodic residence of Queen Wilhelmina.
