Inleiding

Description
Introduction
Freestanding COLUMBARIUM with grouped BENCHES arranged around it on the estate Groenouwe in the hamlet Zilven at Loenen. The estate Groenouwe is owned by the family Broese van Groenou. Wolter Broese van Groenou, who became wealthy as a planter through the cultivation of sugar in former Dutch East Indies, had a large country house built on the estate in 1919, together with a swimming pool, a tennis court and a unique natural golf course with nine holes on heathland. In 1945, the country house had meanwhile been converted into a hotel and leased out, the house burned down almost entirely. Only the so-called 'cellar dwelling' (a later extension to the country house) and the former coach house were spared. Of the house itself, the cellars remain, partly filled with rubble. The tennis court and golf course are still intact, the swimming pool is now a small lake. Behind the coach house stands the oldest building: the wooden hut from which the contractor managed the construction.
In 1925 Wolter had a columbarium built for the family designed by his son Adolf. The interior contains an octagonal space with in the centre a column for him and his wife, topped with an urn containing ashes, and in the seven sides (the eighth contains the entrance) a niche with the urns of their seven children and their descendants, namely from the entrance clockwise Suzanne, Francina, Jeanette, Adolf, Frederika, Emilie and Wolter Jr. The columbarium is characterised by a formal language drawn from expressionist architecture, combined with Oriental influences.
Description
The building, built in Flemish bond brickwork, is constructed on a cruciform ground plan and at a higher level transitions into an octagonal structure. It is capped with a semicircular dome clad in copper. The building stands on a high, projecting plinth, partly executed as a two-course roll course. The four arms of the cross each have at the ends a buttress that tapers in two steps to the facade plane. At the upper side of the four arms of the cross the corners are provided with figured earthenware. In the inner corners between the four arms there is a square block of brickwork that against two sides over virtually the entire height contains a disc of brick. The top of the block is covered with a plate of earthenware. Above this the square form transitions into an octagon that tapers in three steps. The lowest layer has figured earthenware at the corners. The octagon contains in the uppermost layer on all sides a broad horizontal window with lintel and drip edge of earthenware. The window is fitted with multicoloured stained glass. The dome rests on a rim with blocks of earthenware.
The FRONT FACADE contains in the centre, between the buttresses, a recessed plane with the entrance, consisting of a bronze door with a narrow light slit. In front of the entrance a flight of three semicircularly bonded steps. The recessed plane tapers in three steps to the facade plane.
The LEFT, REAR and RIGHT SIDE FACADES are identical to the front facade. However, the recessed bay between the buttresses is absent.
The INTERIOR is almost entirely constructed in earthenware. Walls, niches, shelves in the niches and the central column are clad with figured stones of earthenware. On the column stands a large stone urn on a stone capital. Below the niches are cabinets with bronze doors. The floor is laid with eight stone slabs, beneath which are additional spaces for the placement of urns. Above the door two stones, one with the inscription 'Consecrated in the year 1925' and one with the inscription 'Memory binds what the eye can no longer see'.
The building is located in a fenced wooded part of the estate. Opposite each corner of the building stands a BENCH, made from three large pieces of earthenware. The benches have a bent form, encompassing three sides of an octagon. On the ends the family coat of arms is depicted in applied relief: an octagon with a circular central field containing a comet with a seven-pointed tail, representing father and mother with the seven children. Around the central field a circular band with the names Wolter Broese van Groenou and Jeanette Emilie Wieseman.
Valuation
COLUMBARIUM from 1925 in a style related to Expressionism with Oriental influences.
- Of architectural historical value as a rare example of a columbarium on a private estate from the early 20th century. As such, the columbarium also has typological and rarity value. The object stands out for its rich brick detailing and rich use of materials in the exterior and interior. The architectural style used is exceptional.
- Of cultural historical value as a memorial to the family Broese van Groenou and to the estate Groenouwe, of which a number of important buildings have meanwhile disappeared.
