Inleiding
Binnen het bouwblok van Predikherenstraat, Breedstraat, Lange- en Korte Lauwerstraat gesitueerde eerste Utrechtse WATERTOREN, gebouwd door L.C. Dumont in 1895 in de tuin van de directeur van de Utrechtse Waterleiding Maatschappij door aannemer Dessing. De watertoren is gesitueerd binnen het woonblok in een aan de neo-renaissance verwante stijl.
Omschrijving
Ronde, 39 meter hoge, geheel uit baksteen opgetrokken watertoren, waarvan het met kantelen eindigende reservoirgedeelte breder is dan de schacht. De overgang tussen schacht en reservoir wordt gevormd door van ijzeren balken voorziene gemetselde overkraging. Zowel de schacht als reservoir hebben decoraties van geglazuurde baksteen, kunststeen en natuursteen alsook sierankers. De schacht wordt beëindigd met een omlopend rondboogfries, op het reservoir een korfboogfries boven de lichtspleten.
Het roestvrijstalen Intze reservoir in het interieur met een inhoud van 1500 kubieke meter is van de firma Neumann uit Aken.

Watertoren van algemeen belang vanwege de architectuurhistorische waarde als gaaf en representatief voorbeeld van een watertoren met Neo-Renaissance kenmerken. UTRACHT'S FIRST WATER TOWER, situated within the block bounded by Predikherenstraat, Breedstraat, Lange- and Korte Lauwerstraat, built by L.C. Dumont in 1895 in the garden of the director of the Utrecht Water Supply Company by contractor Dessing. The water tower is situated within the residential block in a style related to Neo-Renaissance.
Description
Round, 39 metres high water tower built entirely of brick, of which the reservoir section terminating in crenellations is wider than the shaft. The transition between shaft and reservoir is formed by masonry corbelling fitted with iron beams. Both the shaft and reservoir have decorations of glazed brick, artificial stone and natural stone as well as ornamental wall anchors. The shaft is terminated with an encircling round-arch frieze, on the reservoir a barrel-arch frieze above the light slits.
The stainless steel Intze reservoir in the interior with a capacity of 1500 cubic metres is by the firm Neumann from Aachen.
