Inleiding
Voormalig WARENHUIS ("Magazijn De Zon"), in opdracht van Vroom & Dreesmann gebouwd, in de bocht van de Oudegracht, met gevels aan de Choorstraat, Stadhuisbrug en Oudegracht. Tot stand gekomen in verschillende fasen, te weten nieuwbouw rond 1850 naar ontwerp van C. Kramm in Neo-Classicistische stijl, uitgebreid in 1903 met een derde verdieping, vervolgens in 1909, 1913 en 1922-24 uitgebreid in verwante stijl door P.J. Houtzagers en tenslotte in 1933 door J. Kuyt, waarbij het oude deel uit 1850 werd vervangen.
Omschrijving
Kolossaal hoekpand, bestaande uit een bouwdeel aan de Choorstraat en Stadhuisbrug, via een over drie verdiepingen doorgetrokken uitbouw verbonden aan een bouwdeel aan de Stadshuisbrug, doorlopend op de Oudegracht-Weerdzijde. Het pand bezit een min of meer L-vormige plattegrond, maximaal vier bouwlagen en platte daken met een lichtkoepel.Het deel aan de Choorstraat is naar achteren doorgetrokken tot aan de Massegast, waar zich in een smalle gevel de bedrijfstoegang bevindt. De gevels zijn opgetrokken in natuursteen.
Het oudste - nog bestaande - deel van het pand is de gevel aan de Stadhuisbrug en de Oudegracht. Dit deel heeft een ronde hoek met een terugliggende vierde bouwlaag aan de Stadhuisbrug en is aan de Oudegracht rechts hoger opgetrokken. Links van de ronde hoek is een travee tot boven de dakrand opgetrokken als gevelvlak, doorbroken door een driekwartronde, glazen erker over drie bouwlagen. De gehele gevel van het bouwdeel aan de Oudegracht is verder geleed door gecanneleerde zuilen op de begane grond, waartussen etalagevensters, en pilasters op de verdiepingen. De tweede en vierde bouwlaag hebben per travee drie gekoppelde vensters, waarvan het middelste het breedst is met diepe neggen, de tweede bouwlaag heeft per travee triplet rondboogvensters. Decoratie in de vorm van medaillons op de pilasters, tussen de tweede en derde bouwlaag en voor de gevel geplaatste beeldhouwwerken, verpersoonlijkend aspecten van de handel, onder meer Mercurius. Voor de vensters van de tweede bouwlaag een balustrade, voor de derde bouwlaag ijzeren hekwerken met symbolen voor handel, waaronder de Mercuriusstaf.
Het bouwdeel aan de Choorstraat en Stadhuisbrug heeft op de begane grond een eenvoudige rechthoekige winkelpui tussen natuurstenen muurdammen, de tweede en derde bouwlaag hebben aaneengesloten vensterreeksen, geleed door pilasters over beide bouwlagen, eindigend in figuratieve voorstellingen. De vierde bouwlaag heeft een smalle, horizontale vensterstrook met borstwering. Ook hier figuratief beeldhouwwerk. Interieur met oorspronkelijk trappenhuis met enkele glas-in-lood vensters en lambrisering, ook glas-in-lood vensters op de verdiepingen en boven de vierde verdieping een lichtkoepel met glas-in-lood.

Description
Colossal corner building, consisting of a building section on the Choorstraat and Stadhuisbrug, connected via a three-storey deep extension to a building section on the Stadhuisbrug, continuing on the Oudegracht side. The building has a roughly L-shaped ground plan, a maximum of four storeys and flat roofs with a light dome. The section on the Choorstraat extends back to the Massegast, where there is a business entrance in a narrow facade. The facades are constructed in natural stone.
The oldest - still existing - section of the building is the facade on the Stadhuisbrug and the Oudegracht. This section has a rounded corner with a recessed fourth storey on the Stadhuisbrug and is raised higher on the right on the Oudegracht side. To the left of the rounded corner is a bay extended to above the roof edge as a facade surface, interrupted by a three-quarter round glazed oriel window spanning three storeys. The entire facade of the building section on the Oudegracht is further articulated by fluted columns on the ground floor, between which are shop windows, and pilasters on the upper storeys. The second and fourth storey have three paired windows per bay, of which the central one is the widest with deep recesses, the second storey has triplet round-arched windows per bay. Decoration in the form of medallions on the pilasters, between the second and third storey and sculptures placed before the facade, personifying aspects of commerce, including Mercury. Before the windows of the second storey a balustrade, before the third storey iron railings with symbols of commerce, including the Mercury staff.
The building section on the Choorstraat and Stadhuisbrug has on the ground floor a simple rectangular shopfront between natural stone wall panels, the second and third storeys have continuous window ranges, articulated by pilasters spanning both storeys, ending in figural representations. The fourth storey has a narrow horizontal window strip with parapet. Here too figural sculpture.
