Willemsplantsoen 2

Inleiding

Drie portalen gezet in archivolten.

Willemsplantsoen 2

Introduction

Built in 1912 to replace the former chapel church, an Old Catholic CHURCH (complex component 1) in neo-Romanesque style designed by E.G. Wentinck. The church is regarded as a cathedral within Old Catholic worship.

The church building is situated with its west facade facing Willemsplantsoen and with the original chapel church on its north facade.

The church was erected in neo-Romanesque style in remembrance of the imperial church Ste Marie. Due to the connection of neo-Gothic to Roman triumphalism, the neo-Gothic architectural style naturally found no approval among the Old Catholic faith community. To embellish the new church building, the following were taken as examples for the towers: the church in Puissalcon (Fra); wall paintings of the triumphal arch, San Apollinare in Classe (Ita); communion rail San Apre in Tuscany; wrought-iron screen of the baptistery San Praxede (Rome) and the chandeliers of the nave Dom in Aachen (Ger).

Description

Three-aisled basilica with western section with two square towers, nave ten bays long, five-sided closed choir and two side apses. Two small staircase towers on either side of the towers and one on the north side of the choir. West facade constructed in brick with natural stone detailing, consisting of a stepped gable three storeys high, flanked by two square towers. Three portals set in archivolts. The central one has a double door with iron fittings beneath the lintel, with a figural mosaic in the tympanum by A. Federlee. On either side of the main entrance two niches. The side portals are a smaller version of this, with a single wooden door with iron fittings beneath the lintel and likewise figural mosaics by A. Federlee in the tympanum. Middle section with two round-arched arcades with small columns with dice capitals, the rows diminishing in length.

Second storey closed by a round-arched frieze. Stepped gable with double round-arched window and pilasters, at the gable apex a small round window. Towers with 3 storeys, the upper two marked by sparing fields beneath a round-arched frieze, within which narrow windows, beneath the pyramidal roofs paired sound holes with pilasters.

Round-arched frieze along the entire side facade, as well as buttresses and round-arched windows of various sizes.

Interior ten bays long, with the separation between nave and lower side aisles formed by round arches resting on composite brick pillars with artificial stone capitals and black natural stone bases. Wooden barrel vault above the nave, resting on a set of wooden corbels and consoles with trefoil motifs on artificial stone blocks. Clerestory with round-arched windows. West side with entrance portal with cross-ribbed vaults, separated from the nave by three round arches, above which the organ gallery. Between the central arch a wrought-iron screen. On the east side the five-sided choir with a raised choir containing a rose window, and round-arched windows on either side.

The entire interior is plastered and furnished with wall paintings by A. Federlee with geometric and Christian motifs, including on the west side David and St. Caecilia on the spandrels beneath the organ gallery and Christ as Good Shepherd on the triumphal arch.

Furthermore floor mosaic in the choir. Furthermore among other important elements: the original wooden benches with trefoil motifs, three metal chandeliers, bishop's throne in the choir and statues of Bonifatius and Willibrordus on the west side.

Valuation

CHURCH of general importance due to its architectural-historical value as a characteristic and well-preserved example of neo-Romanesque architecture. Of cultural-historical value due to its connection with the history of the Old Catholics and designated as a cathedral. In its architectural style the church building keeps the memory of the old Maria church alive and, by consciously avoiding neo-Gothic formal language, expresses the separation from Roman Catholic thought.
