Inleiding
KANTOORPAND, gebouwd in 1904 in opdracht van de levensverzekeringsmaatschappij Pietas gebouwd naar ontwerp van J.A. van Straaten met invloeden van H.P. Berlage en F.L. Wright. Het beeldhouwwerk is van W. Retera.
Omschrijving
KANTOORPAND, op nagenoeg rechthoekige plattegrond met gevels aan zowel Drift als Nobelstraat met op de hoek een toren. Geheel in verschillende soorten natuursteen opgetrokken gevels, aan de Nobelstraat met twee, deels drie bouwlagen en kap, aan de Driftzijde onderkelderd met twee bouwlagen en kap. De vierkante hoektoren ruim uitstekend boven het pand met geheel natuurstenen vierkante torenspits, waaronder aan beide straatzijden een uurwerk is aangebracht. Aan beide zichtgevels dubbele natuurstenen kruisvensters en kloostervensters, op de beganegrond in 1947 vervangen door bronzen winkelpuien. De ingang aan Driftzijde is uitgevoerd met dubbele houten paneeldeur, geflankeerd door een rondboogportaal op gekoppelde zuiltjes, het geheel rijk met neo-romaanse decoratie en bekroond met een beeld van een tronende dame, voorstellende de Zachtmoedigheid, geflankeerd door Wijsheid en Waakzaamheid in de gedaante van twee putti. In de torenuitbouw is overhoeks binnen het gevelvlak een ridderbeeld aangebracht.
Waardering
Kantoorgebouw, van algemeen belang vanwege de architectuurhistorische waarde als goed en redelijk gaaf voorbeeld van een evenwichtig ontwerp in de trant van Berlage en de toepassing van diverse soorten natuursteen. Tevens van stedenbouwkundige waarde vanwege de prominente ligging op de hoek tegenover een plein.

OFFICE BUILDING, on an approximately rectangular plan with facades on both Drift and Nobelstraat with a tower at the corner. Facades constructed entirely in various types of natural stone, on the Nobelstraat with two, partly three storeys and roof structure, on the Drift side with basement and two storeys and roof structure. The square corner tower projecting considerably above the building with an entirely natural stone square tower spire, beneath which on both street sides a clock face is mounted. On both visible facades double natural stone cross windows and cloister windows, on the ground floor replaced in 1947 with bronze shop frontages. The entrance on the Drift side is executed with double wooden panelled door, flanked by a semicircular portal on coupled columns, the whole richly decorated with neo-Romanesque ornament and crowned with an image of an enthroned lady, representing Gentleness, flanked by Wisdom and Vigilance in the form of two putti. In the tower projection a knight's image is placed diagonally within the facade plane.
Valuation
Office building, of general importance for its architectural-historical value as a well-preserved and reasonably intact example of a balanced design in the manner of Berlage and the use of diverse types of natural stone. Also of townscape value for its prominent location at the corner opposite a plein.
