Introduction

Built in 1895, HOSPITAL of the Brothers of John of God. The building consists of two building sections at right angles to each other, a chapel and a gatehouse. It is located on the Mariaplaats, built against the old cloister passage of St. Marie, with a large forecourt and constructed in Neo-Gothic according to a design by architect van Kesteren.

Description

L-shaped, cellared main building of three storeys and two roofs parallel to the building lines. The entire brick-constructed building has a fourteen-bay wide front facade (east wing) with a central projection raised to a gothic stepped gable of three bays. The section to the right of the stepped gable dates from 1928. At right angles to the front section, a nine-bay wide south wing, likewise with a projecting central section raised to a gothic stepped gable. At the turning point of both building sections, an octagonal tower with a needle spire is positioned, protruding. Furthermore, a gatehouse placed against the left of the south wing, providing access to the inner courtyard. Both facades (east and south) with wooden cross windows, placed in arched niches, of which on the second storey with brick three-lobes, the third storey with double arches. Front facade with a pointed-arch-shaped portal located in the central projection with wooden door and stone steps, with above it in the wall piers of the upper floor two niches with figures. The stepped gables with climbing blind niches, brick tracery, ornamental wall anchors and brick pinnacles on the steps. The corner tower on the left with gothic blind niches and single windows, in the extra storey below the needle spire windows and niches set in gothic arches.

Both facades furthermore decorated with ornamental wall anchors, ironwork and dentil mouldings. Along the roof edge a series of roof dormers with tent roofs.

At right angles to the rear facade along the south wing of the cloister passage, a chapel built with a five-sided choir closure, entirely executed in the same style as the main building. Interior of the chapel with cross-rib vaults, doors with metalwork, floors with inlaid patterns, stained-glass windows.
