Inleiding
Voormalig SOCIETEITSGEBOUW "Sic Semper", in 1890 gebouwd op hoek Nieuwegracht en Trans naar ontwerp van architect P.J. Houtzagers.
Bij de bouw zijn deels oudere kelders behouden.
Omschrijving
Geheel onderkelderd pand van twee bouwlagen en samengesteld dak waarin aangekapte dakkapellen, tuitgevels en (hoek)torens. Gevel aan de Trans is negen venstertraveeën breed, gevel aan Nieuwegracht drie venstertraveeën, met als verbindend element tussen beide gevels een op de hoek geplaatste achthoekige toren onder door leien gedekt achthoekige spits met neogotische dakkapelletjes. Aan de Nieuwegrachtzijde is deze linker travee licht risalerend en heeft een stenen balkon op zware consoles en een in de geveltop driepasvormige nis waarin een rondvenster boven een tweelicht. Aan Transzijde doet zich in de linkertravee een hiermee overeenkomstige gevel voor met alleen ter plaatse van het balkon een houten erker. De Transzijde heeft eveneens een risalerende travee, de derde van rechts, die is uitgebouwd tot toren met vierzijdige spits.
In dit bouwdeel is de vernieuwde ingang gelegen.
Alle schuifvensters hebben op de eerste bouwlaag een rondboogvormige beëindiging met tegeltableaus met plantmotieven en op de tweede bouwlaag een stompe spitsboog waaronder tegeltableaus met voorstellingen van onder meer de hoek vóór de bouw van het pand, de naam "Sic Semper" en de jaartallen 1775-1838-1891, voorts onder meer nog afbeelding van de oude situatie in een gevelsteen in de gevel aan de Nieuwegracht. Aan Trans een gevelsteen met cartouche en daarbinnen een - nu onleesbare - afbeelding.
De bouwlagen worden gescheiden door bakstenen geprofileerde waterlijsten. De gevel wordt beëindigd met een ter plaatse van de torens deels boogfries en deels uitgemetseld siermetselwerk, ijzeren crête en gestileerde planten- en bloemenmotieven langs de dakrand. De dakgoot rust op gesneden klossen. Op de hoeken, aan de neogotische dakkapellen en ter bekroning van de tentdaken en torenspitsen smeedijzeren bloemmotieven.
Een deel van de oorspronkelijke interieurs is nog aanwezig, onder meer het trappenhuis, stuc- en houten plafonds, lambrisering en enkele schouwen.
Waardering
Voormalig SOCIETEITSGEBOUW van algemeen belang vanwege de architectuurhistorische waarde als markant en rijk voorbeeld van het werk van P.J. Houtzagers met neogotische elementen. Voorts vanwege de stedenbouwkundige waarde vanwege de situering. Van cultuurhistorische waarde vanwege de bestemming welke is verbonden met de geschiedenis van het verenigingsleven.

Introduction

Description
Completely cellared building of two storeys with a composite roof featuring inserted roof dormers, spout gables and (corner) towers. The facade on the Trans is nine window bays wide, the facade on Nieuwegracht is three window bays, connected by an octagonal tower placed on the corner with a slate-covered octagonal spire with neo-gothic small roof dormers. On the Nieuwegracht side, this left bay is slightly projecting and has a stone balcony on heavy consoles and a three-lobed niche in the gable top containing a round window above a two-light opening. On the Trans side, the left bay displays a corresponding facade with only a wooden oriel where the balcony is located. The Trans side also has a projecting bay, the third from the right, which is extended to form a tower with a four-sided spire.
The renovated entrance is located in this building section.
All sash windows have, on the first storey, a semi-circular termination with tile tableaux featuring plant motifs, and on the second storey a blunt pointed arch beneath tile tableaux depicting among other things the corner before the building was constructed, the name "Sic Semper" and the years 1775-1838-1891, furthermore including a depiction of the old situation in a facade stone in the Nieuwegracht facade. On the Trans side a facade stone with cartouche containing an image now illegible.
The storeys are separated by moulded brick drip mouldings. The facade is terminated with, at the towers, partially ornamental brick arches and partially decorative brickwork, iron crête and stylised plant and flower motifs along the roof edge. The roof gutter rests on carved corbels. On the corners, on the neo-gothic roof dormers and as a crowning of the tent roofs and tower spires, wrought-iron flower motifs.
Part of the original interiors remain, including the staircase, stucco and wooden ceilings, wainscoting and several fireplaces.
Valuation
Former SOCIETY BUILDING of general importance on account of its architectural-historical value as a striking and richly designed example of the work of P.J. Houtzagers with neo-gothic elements. Furthermore of urban-planning value on account of its location. Of cultural-historical value on account of the function which is connected with the history of associational life.
